My 2013 manual BMW allowed remote start. As long as the parking brake was pulled tight and the shifter was in neutral, it would start. I really don't see a problem with it, or why Ford won't do this.

These days I don't see remote start happening in MT cars until their manual transmissions get a park sprag just like what the automatics have.

Hard to believe any MT car ever got remote start from the factory as opposed to being at best a dealer-installed feature.

While remote start on MT would be nice, it's really not that bad to go out, start it, clean off the car if needed, and either go back inside to warm up or get in and drive away, by which time the temps should be warm enough if plugged in.

My co-worker started his Gen 4 Camaro in the driveway on a cold winter morning, while letting it warm up, he went in to shave (true story). Came back out a few minutes later, car was gone. Got it back a week or so later in pretty bad shape. It was an auto car with an ignition key, dont know if the doors were locked or not while it was running. Thats a good reason right there to not trust some low lifes.

Back when my wife and I still had commutes, that's basically what we did. Scratching a windshield with an ice scraper just once was lesson enough about letting the defroster do all the hard work.

We probably wouldn't have gone back in the house to finish up some last-minute item or other if we were living in an apartment or condo, or in a location where property crime was more likely.

I would like to develop a kit for this in my spare time this year. It'll take some research, but I believe that it is doable. The system would definitely include plenty of interlocks for safety and would be nice to work with a common/affordable remote. Maybe cellular?
Then release it for DIY.

I know my 2003 330ci (manual) had remote start.

My '97 540, '99 540, '01 M5, '04 330, '05 M3, '08 550 and '12 650 all had MT... but did not have remote start, nor was it a factory option.

Its sad how sheltered some become when lavished in warmth 24x365. LOL!

It’s gets cold here... once or twice. Like low 50’s.

There’s other hell to pay for the nice weather. High insurance rates and inflated housing prices to start. Lol

I ordered all of my BMW's at Erhard BMW Farmington Hills. The service tech guys always looked out for me, perhaps they enabled it..? Heck, I am getting old & maybe it was my vette that had remote start? Either way, I loved it and miss it in current cars. See no reason why remote start on manuals is not offered in cars today. specially when you have pushbutton start and more safety.

Because it requires the car to be parked in neutral instead of in gear, and would have to say so in the manual (instead of saying to park in '1' as the manual currently does).

If the manual told people to park in neutral, the first time someone limp-wristed the parking brake resulting in the car rolling downhill and over a little kid even a mediocre lawyer would successfully sue Ford's hind legs off.

Why would you want to start it up remotely?

For me:
90% of the year to let the AC run and cool down the interior.
10% of the year to warm the interior up.

With the 6 speed, there is already an empty leg (opposite reverse) to put a parking sprag. Use the same gear selector and have it lock the output shaft to the transmission case. Using this method, if the transmission knows it is in "Neutral-Park" remote start on a manual would work just like remote start on an automatic.

Neutral-Park could also work just like pressing the clutch.

Most of remote start for manual will ask you to press a button, and then engage parking brake, get out while engine idling, and then lock the door to engage remote start.
This is to ensure two things. One is the car is absolutely in neutral. Second is the car can hold itself with parking brake.

Isn't it ironic the manufacturers don't want to option a remote start feature for manual transmissions for liability reasons. Yet they allow adaptive cruise speeding up and slowing down; lane assist features trying to keep the "texter's" in their lane; emergency assist braking in-case someone forgets or is too slow to apply the brake; and self driving Uber's, Tesla's, etc. If they wanted, they could put enough interlock features on the shutdown and restart program that an issue shouldn't occur.
I believe the majority of accidental starts is a factor of installers leaving safety features uninstalled and others trying to defeat the safety features.

It's actually not ironic. It's liability. If you get into an accident while driving, the other party can sue you. If your car get into an accident without you in it, the other party have to sue the car manufacturer.
