Feb 5 2019 7718 - 2011-2019 Mustang/F-150 - 5.0L - Tick Tap And/or Typewriter Noise At Idle

Some 2011-2019 Mustang and F-150 vehicles equipped with a 5.0L engine may exhibit a ticking noise at idle after an engine oil change. It is often referred to as typewriter noise because of its similarity to the sound of a mechanical typewriter. The noise in question may be heard on some engines when engine temperatures reach 150°F (65°C) or higher and engine speed is at idle up to approximately 1700 RPM's. It can typically be heard at the front wheel well, and is often isolated to the transmission bell housing or oil pan area. typewriter noise is not detrimental to engine function or durability and has no short or long term effects on the engine. This an operating characteristic of the 5.0L engine and no repairs should be attempted.

Yup, I just saw this in a Facebook group. Good to hear that it's normal and won't cause any harm. I just wish they would've stated the cause of the noise.

I posted same in General Forum on here earlier.

I have a feeling a lot of Customers who have the tick will now be turned away, because the official statement is saying it’s a normal characteristic of ALL 2011-2019 F150/Mustangs with the 5.0.

The statement is NOT separating out build generations of the 5.0, it’s lumping all together.

So for those going in with the concern or complaint, be prepared to be shown OR told it’s normal.

The 6.7 has had the same noise since 2011 . failure rate on the 6.7 is low for the production numbers that are built .

As much as people here have had engines replaced, no one has yet managed to show that the tick and their issues were connected in anyway. The fact that after 2 years no connection really has been found may indicate there is none and we've been hunting a ghost.

EDIT: To be clear while it's nice to know they believe there is no effect from it, I'd still like to know the actual cause of it.

Was bound to happen, wasn't adding up, especially people blaming the plasma liners when in fact the 2011-17 had the same tick and did not have the liners. Glad it can be put to rest now.

And no explanation of the cause.

How can oil change be causing it?

So mine started before an oil change, so I guess this statement wouldn't cover mine as a characteristic of the engine? Glad I went in and had mine documented at 1,000 miles when it started.

Mine also occurred before the oil change.

Since no any explanation is given this document is saying:

Do not come to us if you have just a tick. Wait for the real issue to happen, or have a proof of it.

So it becomes owner's duty to check tolerances, internal part wear, cylinder walls, oil filter for traces of metal.

I mentioned issues discovered during tick inspection at dealerships on board member's cars.

Now to wait for the 2k rattle being "normal" in 18+'s.
