I don’t know the answer but does metal get more brittle the colder it is? That’s my only question/consideration about freezing.

I’m not sure either in this situation. I may have to consider putting. Stress relief cut down the entire side of the gear, while being careful not to go through to the shaft. Maybe then I can throw it back in the shop press and it should let go. Of course, I’m always open to other options too.

After “Rollin Down in the Deep” for a couple of hours today, I hit “pay dirt”, although it was at the cost of another gear. It wasn’t pretty, configuring the press plates in a way that gave me the clearance needed to get them off, but I managed to do so safely and without any further issues. With that being said, let me introduce you guys to Snag (AKA 5th gear). He’s missing the most teeth.

Next up is Bucky (AKA 3rd gear). He’s missing two teeth as a result of using him to pull 6th gear.

Snap ring, 3rd/4th synchro slider assembly, 4th gear, and both needle bearings have been removed. Note: This is as far as the shaft can be broken down.

Now it’s time to locate replacement gears and then decide whether to go back to my idea of having everything strengthened, that can be strengthened. After handling the gears and seeing what they look like and how easily teeth can break off, I have to consider my options moving forward. Overall, “today was a good day!”

Strange fracture pattern on Snag, any chance this is a powdered metal gear?

Yes, Snag actually does look like a powdered meta gear. Bucky looks to be a stronger gear, but has a powdered look seems more coarse.

Can't wait for the next gen MT-82 with 3D printed plastic gears! ;)

Actually I am pleased with how mine is working so far, smooth shifts and rarely hangs up 2-3 at high rpm (never, if I take my time and fully depress the clutch).

It sure seems to be headed in that direction. Brittle gears being pressed off just like the service manual says and teeth began popping off and flying across the garage. I’m glad I wear safety glasses because a few of the teeth took off like bullets being fired from a gun.

Well, it looks like I may be in a lot of trouble here, regarding the sourcing of replacement gears. First I called my local Ford parts counter and the guy assisting me said he didn’t show gears for the countershaft and that I should check back in 3-4 weeks. I thought this was odd, given he couldn’t give me any part numbers for the gears.

Next, I called GForce Transmissions, who makes the billet MT82-D4 gears for Calimer and they said the gears are proprietary to Calimer, as he paid for all the designing of the gears to his specs.

Finally, I called Calimer and an employee told me that they don’t sell parts to customers, but I could send my transmission in to them to have it rebuilt. I explained that I was doing the build myself and had already disassembled the entire transmission, at which time he said: “Yeah, that would be a problem.“ What he told me next was very discouraging. He said that the reason I can‘t locate any gears is because everything is on back order and that’s why they buy MT82-D4 transmissions themselves to disassemble them for parts needed in their builds.

If anyone knows of a reputable place that can build gears and has a “no job too small mindset” will you please post the information here, so that I can explore options for getting out of the weeds on this? Thank you.

@stang1087, just confirming, did you have the countershaft gears replaced in your transmission?

This is confusing to me, as Part number JR3Z-7K316-A, which is described as Gear 5th Speed Cluster, looks more like my countershaft 3rd gear and nothing like my countershaft 5th gear. See comparison photos below.

@stang1087, thanks again for going out of your way to post the information that I needed. Although there was some confusion in looking at internet photos and the actual gears from my tranny, I feel confident that the info. listed in your RO is accurate. With that being said, I placed an order for the gears today. Hopefully I’ll have them by mid Nov. I’ll definitely post an update once I get them in hand.
