I'm in the process of installing some Steeda lowering springs. Got the front off & ready to go to the shop to have the new springs pressed on. But Im having a hell of a time doing the rear. I removed the 2 main subframe bolts along with the braket, 2 strut bolts, rear sway bar link nut & started to lower the jack but still not even close to enough room to pull out the spring. Do I have to completely remove the exhaust to get it to go lower? It looks like the sway bar is hitting on it. No where on the instructions does it call for that. Ive watched a few CJ videos & others & not one shows you having to do that. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Called Steeda, but they also said it should only have to be the 2 subframe bolts & 2 strut bolts.

I ran into this issue this last week. I had strut completely off, swaybar disconnected, camber arm off, ride height sensor removed, and I still couldn't get the arm low enough. The axle wasn't hitting, but something was holding it back. I didn't need to get the spring out, so I didn't investigate too much, just though wow, this is going to be an issue when I get new springs.

I am interested to see what you find out. I plan to do FP springs this year, so in for the answers!

You can try leaving the exhaust connected but unbolt the two mounts above the diff and the two above the mufflers.

my exhaust was already off when I took the springs out. I used a pry bar to walk the springs out.

There's LOTS of factory bushing bind on the rear control arms. You can literally hang from them and they won't bottom out (Vorshlag has a picture of this)
I had a couple friends help push the control arm down low enough until there was enough room to get the spring out

This is as low as I can get it. Its not even sitting on the jack anymore. I can push down on it a bit but nowhere near enough to pull out the spring.

If I start to lower the jack under the differential more the weight starts to hit on the exhaust with the sway bar. Guess Ill be removing the sway bar next. The instructions on Steeda website say nothing about this. I guess they are too lazy to update them. Ill start removing the sway bar & see how that goes. Thanks for the input.

Try dropping the mufflers down and get the sway bar up and out of the way. Like this:

I ended up just removing the sway bar. It was enough to get er done. Still had to put my whole fat ass on the rotors to squeeze it out but its in now. Thank you for your input. Will still watch the vid lol. Funny thing is, I was still planning on dropping the exhaust to replace the resonators. But was saving it for the end so I can use the jack to lower the exhaust. Gonna try to weld it since many say it sags a little on the clamps. Thanks again.

This thread has me itchy all over. I have a set of springs I plan to install in the coming days. I’ve watched about a dozen YouTube videos on the step by step instructions for install. I pray I don’t encounter this issue.

Just do as the CJ videos say, & also add to remove the sway bar. The rest is correct. I have it all back together now on that side. Will do the other side on my next days off. I just got a little annoyed. I like to plan out my jobs with precise timing & have everything ready. Threw me for a loop when none of the rest was in the instructions. But thats how all projects go. Starts out as, I can do this>>OMG wtf did I get my self into>>the hell with this Im taking these parts off & returning them>>oh ok, here we go its looking good>>hell yeah this is great I knew I could do this>>cant wait to do it again. Rinse & repeat lol.

Vic, please tell us what springs/dampers you chose and after driving on them your feedback.

That's the subframe....you want to pull the control arm down, the piece that the spring sits in. I lowered the subframe a bit as well but pushed downward on the rotor to pull the control arm down.

Glad you got it in though.

Sport Lowering Springs - Progressive?
I have the Steeda minimum drop lowering springs. The 200/800 rate is fantastic.
