It saved me from rear ending a brand new Aventador the other day. So in my opinion, it's worth it.

The collision mitigation might be the best part of the package - if you ever need it.

On my Mercedes GLK the ACC is a dream in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Slows to 0 when needed, tracks right behind the car in front of you, and "mitigates" that possibility of a rear-end collision at all times (depending on the car the cruise might have to be active). It should reduce your insurance but I have no knowledge on that.

For 1200, it's definitely worth it, for convenience and for safety, if you live in an urban area. If you live far from a big city then maybe you won't have as much use for it but I'd definitely recommend it if you can afford it for the safety aspect.

Before you have it, no. After you have it, yes. It makes cruising on a crowded highway with people who can't decide what speed to go a non-issue. Of course, if you don't live in a large metro area then doubtful you use it.
This.

I use cc a lot. Quite simply, it helps keep me from speeding. And it's a nice convenience if you drive a lot, highway or not. I actually find it more useful in traffic where speed alterations are more likely to occur. Which, when you think about it, is contrary to the typical thought pattern of traditional CC where it only sees use on long open highways for road trips.

However, I should say that if you're coming from a vehicle without ACC you may not like it AT FIRST because the driving experience is a bit different. The biggest drawback is that since your car will match the speed of the vehicle in front of you, you may find that the car is less inclined to yield to you (get over to allow you to pass). Even at the closest proximity setting, I find cars often don't take the hint.

OTOH, if you don't have ACC now, you may not know what you're missing. So if cost is any issue, then perhaps it would be wise to pass on that option.

My Grand Cherokee SRT8 had the option and once you're used to it, going back to basic CC plain sucks. Plus, the fact that it's packaged with rains sensing wipers and front collision warning is pretty nice.

I've never had BLIS before but once I got it I loved it. I wish I had gotten ACC though :-/

I have it in my Taurus. It kicks out at 20 mph. It says "driver must intervene". It works well, but I don't know if it is worth the money. It says I am going to rearend somebody all the time. I don't have it set too sensitive either. In heavy traffic it leaves too much space between you and the car in front. People just cut in front and it slams on the brakes. On fairly straight and not too crowded roads it works very well.

Totally worth it in my opinion, particularly in moderate to heavy traffic.

It's fantastic. I use it all the time on streets and freeways. If you can afford it I would advise that you definitely get it!

If you enjoy using cruise control, then you will probably enjoy it just as much. Regular cruise control is so incomplete without it.

It allows you to put even more concentration on your actual driving so you are always better prepared to react to emergency situations because you don't have to think about braking as often as you do in regular car.

Can anyone tell me whether it makes a difference in insurance premiums for them? And how much?

Yep rain sensing wipers and collision mitigation as well.
I like these extras I think they're worth it.

I've driven a few of the manual S550's with ACC. The car slows to a point (which is a great safety feature), but as soon as you engage the clutch to downshift, the ACC is cancelled anyways. If that's something that will annoy you, then avoid the ACC on manual transmissions.

I definitely plan on getting it for the wife's Explorer though.

I got ACC for the crash mitigation because I can't tell you how many times some asshat speeds through a parking lot at 30+ mph while I'm backing out of a spot with a giant SUV or pickup parked next to me and no way of seeing anything coming. Crash mitigation with rear park assist has saved me in these situations. I park in no mans land but someone with a new SUV or F150 is guaranteed to park next to me, these S550s are so low that there's no visibility pulling out of a spot. Leave it to the idiot Honda Civic ricers to race through parking lots like it's a highway not paying attention to anyone else on the road. I am using ACC more than I thought I would and I love it.

Edit: it is actually BLISS that alerts you when you are in reverse and a car is headed toward you from either side. *facepalm*
