Respectfully, I refuse to accept that line of thinking. Of course it'll cost Ford money to fix existing cars. Why shouldn't it? We paid for the feature and it doesn't work. They owe us a fix or a refund.

That's the problem. The back is supposed to cool and doesn't. In fact, the back actually heats up for some of us after the cooling system has been on a while.
I'm very happy with my 401A package. The Shaker Pro system does sound considerably better than the standard version, and the cross-traffic alert comes in very handy when wedged between two behemoths in a parking lot. The rest is just icing on the cake.
I've owned both the MT-82 and the 6R80. The 6R80 provides, hands-down, a much better driving experience for me. And while I do have to confess to having arthritic knees and a traffic-ridden commute, those aren't the only reasons I enjoy the auto more.

I suppose it's possible there could be variations in the control modules, but that would only serve to foster confusion. Bottom line, I don't think Auto is actually supposed to be a toggle. It wasn't in my '13 and my '15 follows suit. The owner's manual has nothing to say about it either.
I don't believe the Auto button is meant to be a toggle. At least it's never worked that way on mine. Pressing Auto any number of times simply enables automatic mode. Adjusting the fan speed or selecting a specific output option is what puts the system in manual mode.
Ford better fix it! Otherwise, they owe us a refund for a feature that doesn't work. I think we should all complain to our dealer, get a case # from Ford Service, and be diligent about not accepting this as "normal." That's what'll make a TSB happen.
