I Change My Mind.

So this is just a little story of sharing my mustang with my 6 year old son.

My family loves muscle cars but we have different taste. My mother is a big fan of challengers and hellcats in particular. Whereas I'm obviously a mustang fan. Anyway she had converted my son to the dark side and he jokingly said he wanted a Challenger.

Anyway we took a road trip down to Morro Bay in CA and on the way back I had more comments than usual about the car (mostly European tourists who loved the Corsa exhaust). About half way home he said can you roll down the windows so we can hear the car? Now that alone brought a huge smile to my face.

Then as we got home and we're unpacking the car he randomly looks to me and says ummm....I change my mind. I actually want a mustang when I'm older. They're so cool.

WE GOT HIM BOYS! one more convert who can hopefully keep the legend alive for another 50 years.

Pony cars.

They're Pony cars, not Muscle Cars. Challengers and Chargers are Muscle cars, Mustangs and Camaros are Pony cars. A Corvette is a Sports Car.

Actually the original 1970 Challenger and it’s sister car, the Plymouth Barracuda we’re competitors to the Mustang and Camaro. All were considered “pony” cars. The Charger along with the Coronet and Belvedere were considered “muscle” cars.

They're Pony cars, not Muscle Cars. Challengers and Chargers are Muscle cars, Mustangs and Camaros are Pony cars. A Corvette is a Sports Car.

Nova you always bring a certain degree of knowledge and beauty to posts that many users can't match. I applaud and thank your efforts.

Edit: but actually just for conversation sake I think a lot of know msutangs are pony cars but to me it seems silly to have all of these subclass names for cars that directly compete with each other. Essentially there are only 2 pony cars and 2 muscle cars. Now the Corvette you're absolutely right it is a full on sports car.

But mustang Camaro and challenger could all easily be cross shopped today and so they just get lumped together.

Back in the 60s-70s when you had a dozen automakers making pony/muscle car models it made a lot more sense to break them out.

Anyway just my .02

intermediate sized 2 door coupes like the Pontiac GTO, Oldsmobile 442, Buick GSX, Ford Fairlane GT, etc were considered muscle cars. Compact chassis cars like the Mustang/Cougar, Camaro/Firebird and Challenger/Barracuda were considered Pony cars. Honestly I'm not 100% sure what the AMC cars (Javelin/AMX) were considered.
