Yes, my car sounds like a ticker tape machine at idle and low rpms!

I'm getting close to doing another oil change at 8K miles and I was wondering if I should go with 2 cans of ceratec (given the 10 qt capacity) or stick to one.

I'm afraid if I take the car to the dealership for the noise that they will needlessly replace the engine.

I put in less than 1/2 of 1 can. So about 100-150ml for 10qts of oil. Very little is needed to quiet it down. It stopped all of the idling tick, and I only hear a little bit of muffled tick/piston slap in the 1,200-2,000rpm range when in neutral now. I'm a bit worried about the longevity of this engine, but everyone (Ford and the dealer) keeps saying this is a normal sound since it has larger cylinders and short skirts on the new pistons. The noise is quite annoying. Guys are getting whole long blocks replaced, and they sound the same.

Another thing I may try is adding the A/C belt tensioner that TSB #12-8-14 was issued for the 2011-2014 GT's. The new 2018 5.0L comes with the timing cover machined to install the belt tensioner. Only reason they didn't install it, is because of cost and also maybe squeezing out a couple more HP.

Will a 1/2 can ceratec severely discolor 10 qts of oil?

i'm asking coz the dealer mechanic might question the color of the drained oil during mandatory 6 months oil change.

It will discolor the oil. if you have an issue, change the oil again before bringing it in.

The best answer is of course, do your own oil changes. But not everyone does, so be careful about doing that. Some won't care, and know exactly what it is. Also if your oil does discolor enough to where it starts runing almost black from heavy use, then you won't notice the small amount of Ceratec. However, most oil nowadays, even after 7,500 miles, still looks semi-clear and dark brown.

I will do the same. Remember, Ceratec isn't fixing the problem, only reducing friction to cover it up. If installing a belt tensioner has no affect on mine, I intend on changing the oil back to plain old 5w20 and really start pressing the issue with my service tech.
I've heard some engines may exhibit some noise on occassion, but the amount the Gen3 is making on such a wide basis, really is unsatisfactory, imo.
If it's somehow considered normal, how does this engine expect to have any lomgevity? Also, how does Ford expect to maintain decent sales now that the word is out? I love this car, but would never have bought it knowing how common this noise is, normal or not.

If not for all the forums I'd have thought something like a heat shield had come lose on my car. Otherwise the car sounds like an automotive symphony.

Thanks, I'll just do one can on this change with Pennzoil Ultra 5w20. Walmart had some killer black Friday deals on oil!

add as little as possible to fix the sound.

used oil will look more like liquid paste. not transparent. ceratec will not dissolve, it will be present as a distinct whiteish substance.

I would be worried about unintended consequences. This product may coat cylinder walls with moly platelets and reduce piston noise, but what will it do to the flow of oil into tight spaces like crank journals?

i have a couple cans of ceratec just in case, was about to use after my first dealer oil change but dealer's use of Shell 5w30 ultra seem to have quieted down the engine both cold and warm. had the tick on cold start only.

dealer here don't even have 5w20, they recommend 5w30 due to bein a tropical country.

I don't think there has ever been a case where that's a known problem.

Where are you located? I've often wondered if I should run 5w30 here in south east Florida. Temps are mostly upper 70's to 100+ all year round. It's a special treat to get weather in the 60s or below here.

All journal bearings are fed by forced oil flow via the positive displacement oil pump. Cera Tech or any other additive like that wouldn't be around today if it damaged engines.

The layer that Ceratec leaves on the surface of the metal is in the millionths of an inch. When the gaps between bearings and other parts is in the thousandths, the oil will easily flow, and won't even be noticed.

For some reason, car manufacturers caution against oil additives.

The moly will, as someone said, be burnished down to a layer in the millionths of an inch, but first the goopy additive has to circulate through the engine.
