Curious how much you are saving in buying 87 vs 93? For me it would be like $20 a month...not exactly earth shattering savings.
That's what it's all about. How many miles do you use your car in a month. When I live up North I but on 75 miles a day, 375 miles a week and 1500 miles a month. The current difference between 87 & 93 is currently $0.37 a gallon at the Costco I used to go too. $0.37 x 1500 = $555.00. That's a car payment. And enough for me to switch.

Which is true if you get 1mpg.

DUH!! I knew something didn’t look right. I’m such an idiot.:cwl::crackup:

OK, at 25 miles per gallon I’d use 60 gallons. Times the difference ($0.37) that would be $22.20, right. I’d have stuck with 93.

What about using octane booster and 87
Some common octane boosters are not friendly on cats and O2 sensors. By the time you add enough to bump 87 to 91/93 it may even be more expensive.

I would just spring the extra $ on premium if you think the additional octane is necessary.

Octane can be a hotly debated issue with strong feelings. It’s been ingrained in us that high octane is ‘better’.

I remember a gas TV commercial in the 1970’s (yeah, I’m oldugly too) where a guy pulls in for a fill up, and after the attendant tells him about all the magical things about ‘hi test’, he says in closing the ad, ‘Give me the good stuff’.

Others have pointed out the technical issues and details of 87 vs 91 vs 93 octane and how the Coyote 5.0 might respond under various conditions. In my driving over not quite 11,000 miles, I’ve run each of 87 and 93 about half the time.

My butt dyno could never tell the difference in feel or sound.

I seem to remember a Car & Driver test somewhere that dyno’d a 1%-3% difference in hp on the 5.0 with 87 vs 93 octane. In street driving, the seat of my pants could never feel that difference.

Regardless, I still generally used 93 in the summer, rationalizing that it might reduce risk of pinging (even though I never felt any). This year I’ll probably see how shocked I am by prices and the difference vs 87.

YMMV.

...since I don't race or track, I'm sure it would run fine.

However, I'll continue to buy Premium until I can't get it...........

Read the Owner's Manual. Note that it recommends 87 octane for the 5.0. That's what it's designed to run on in stock tune under all weather conditions. It won't run better or make any additional power on gas with more knock resistance. It doesn't work that way. Don't throw away your money on a myth. (None of this applies to a modified and/or tuned engine, which may well require 91 or 83 octane. I am talking a stock 5.0.)

Sorry Dave, but we have addressed this numerous times on here and you are incorrect. 87 is not recommended, it is the minimum required. 92 is recommended and our horsepower ratings are based on it.

Regardless, use what you want and/or what works best in your car. But posting incorrect information doesn’t help anyone.

i feel like this should be a sticky or something at this point. bottom line. stock car with stock tune will be just fine on 87. ive run more 87 than anything else. did not notice a difference with 93. only difference i notice is when i run E85.

I would be more concerned about not using top tier fuel vs. high octane...

At least if 91 is only reccomended, not required you shouldn’t see any warranty issues should you choose to use 87.
That is correct. My wife's Volvo requires 91. My Brother in Law who works for Volvo says he uses 87 all the time in his without issue. I do not doubt him but if my engine goes boom he's not paying for the replacement.
