20 to 30 minutes of driving at 75 to 80 mph moves mine about 1/4 of the way around the dial on a day around 10C - 15CI took it for a drive today. After about fourty minutes of city driving the axle temp gauge hadn't moved, so I got on the motorway and drove about 18 miles at 80 mph. Nothing. Not even a pixel above 50 °C.
So I'm not sure it's working. I understand that the diff warms up very slowly, but how slowly? I can't believe it doesn't even reach 50 °C after more than an hour.![]()
Well, mine moves notably, unless it's below freezing. The problem with differential overheating in the S550 is that the exhaust pipes run along the side of it in a way that gets the immediate area quite warm. That's why simple air scoop diff coolers and fins don't help (and in fact, they can make it worse), requiring pumped cooling with a fan driven HX further forward on the car.Hey, you didn't say how cold was outside. If it was cold, it'd be normal for diff oil not to reach 122F, so I don' think anything is wrong with your gauge. I need to go somewhere 30 miles from my house (each way) one of these days. Will pay attention if the diff temp gauge moves, and report back. The high is around 50F nowadays, so don't expect the gauge to move, even though mine starts moving at 100F, not 122F (50C), like yours.
