Am I the only one that thinks a Gated Gearbox is basically a set of training wheels? I love the way they look and would take an Audi R8 in a minute, but having slept through 3's on the column, 4's and 5's on the floor, I find the GT350 Tremec a nice engaging challenge!

I would argue that pulling off a quick gearchange through a gated manual may actually pose more of a challenge.
It's honestly the same. Gated has a more psychological effect that mechanical effect from what I can tell. It's not the gates guiding the shifter anyway. It's the gearbox linkage and fork guides.

Nothing beats the challenge of driving an MT-82 for 6 years (especially in winter at -40) :crackup:

On the plus side it taught me to shift like a fancy Nancy using just my fingers and letting the guides do the work.

Obviously. My point was that the fact that there are gates at all could only serve as a potential hazard (things falling in to gates) whereas the non-gated version doesn't have that concern assuming a boot is installed.

This makes sense to me. I always thought that would be true.
The trans goes into the gear either way. You aren't going to be looking at the gates when you shift.

If I were designing a pretty metal plate for a car I would make it so that the shifter would never touch the plate. Otherwise you're going to end up with an ugly looking shifter lever and ugly plate, because they will rub on each other and get all scratched up.

The parts in the image above are either brand new or designed not to rub, for example.

That wouldn't surprise me. Any movement between the body of the car and the transmission will decrease the possible width of the metal fingers as well.

I keep staring at the gated pattern above and it actually makes me think it’d be harder to shift as fast as the modern manuals we currently have

The gated shifters purpose is to slow your shifting down. It gave those Italian synchros time to work.
