It doesn't say that, just that there is a core charge. You'll pay it only if you don't have one to exchange it for, along with a healthy fee.

Or just buy the 800HP Dodge crate motor. It's cheaper by 3000 and actually available. :)

But it won’t be numbers matching. Insert punch line here.

*Sigh* I really dislike automotive journalism sometimes. $24,748.43 is the cost for a service engine only. The full long block is $43,539.37.

More crazy numbers from Ford but will someone tell me the difference between a "service engine" and a long block? TIA...

KB
Service engine is basically block, crank assembly with pistons, and valve train with heads. The assumption being that you can transfer the other components over from the old engine. Long block is the whole kit and kaboodle including supercharger, injectors and the lot. Half the time ford’s long blocks are full drop in but the other half you still need more stuff before you can drop in.

I thought that seemed low. I think I remember the Terminator engine being around $20k back in 2003.

Thanks, Mike and I had a notion that's what it meant. Sounds like what we used to call a short block in my grease monkey days. I very much wanted to put a 426 in my '69 340 'Cuda but couldn't afford the Hemi "long block" which, at the time, was around six hundred bones IIR. That was a very large sum of money in 1970. The bank repo'd 'Cuda only cost $2k.

The really messed up part is Ford considers a short block as just the block, crank and pistons.

Let's be clear. In general:

Shortblock typically consists of a block with the crank, rods, pistons installed.

Longblock typically consists of shortblock with complete cylinder heads/cams and sometimes the front cover, chains, etc installed.

The 40k Predator motor quoted is a fully dressed longblock.

I guess this should give us an idea of what the crate motor will cost? Otherwise buy the crate motor?
