The new 2016 Focus RS coming sort of shares the 2.3L Ecoboost with the Mustang and Lincoln MKC. This is true except the RS engine will be an evolution of the Mustang engine. Ford has stated that it will have 215+ HP but wild speculation has the engine output at 350 lb-ft of Torque and 360 HP. Many of the 'changes' applied to this engine are similar to what the aftermarket is already doing to the Mustang Ecoboost engine, namely:
- lower restriction intake
- lower restriction exhaust
- larger intercooler
- larger twin-scroll turbocharger

However, Ford is planning on sleeving the cylinders. I am pondering if this is a heat management action or a strengthening of the lower end to handle even higher outputs.

There are also stated 'changes' to the head to allow freer breathing. I suppose we will need to wait for the Focus RS launch to get the full rundown and technical details of what the changes will be but what a potential race engine this could become.

They aren't actually sleeving the block. They are changing the material the liners are made of to something stronger. They obviously think there's a need or they wouldn't spend the money.

Personally I'm going to be using a CNC Werx CSS. Cheaper than full sleeves and has been proven on multiple different engines. Hopefully I end up with enough power to put it to the test on our engines.

Edit: here's a picture of the CSS installed on an ecoboosted engine.

I wanna see short block cost. If it's cheap enough, makes sense to build a block up from that, and swap motors. That is, if it is truly stronger than our block. The question I have is if this new revision is making it's way into MY2016 Mustang.

I'm curious if it'll be the new standard too.

Doubtful. The Focus RS is branded as a specialty car, thus gets a specialty motor. Maybe someday it'll make its way into an EB Mustang, like how some of the Boss 302 upgrades made it into the Coyote for '15. But I'd expect Ford to wait for a major refresh before doing that.

I was thinking long block in the Ford Racing catalog to fit the Mustang. That way the block/piston changes AND the head changes could be contained in one update.

Its going to be the the same block. Different head and manifolds. Pop your hoods. You will see the bolts and necessary hardware for it to be mounted horizontally. Well minus the engine mounts of course.

I could see using the updated block but an entire long block would probably be a waste of money. The RS internals will probably not be a significant upgrade and price/performance won't be there vs what the aftermarket will have out.
