Best way to keep the wight down? Go light when checking the option boxes. There is no free lunch. If you can't live without the luxury options and all the high-tech gizmos, don't complain about the Mustang's weight.

I don't think the FR500GT ever got that light. IIRC it was always a very heavy car and it's inability to shed weight was its biggest problem and reason it didn't succeed.
Yeah, pre-'07's could go down to 2900lbs. I know the FR500 wasn't insane but, it won a championship against the M3's and 911's... It had a decent 5 year stint. Not nearly as successful as the Boss 302 so, when compared to that, the FR500 wasn't that great.

Which championship did it win? Do you have a link that shows the weight at 2900?

The FR500S and R and the 302S and R all had the same shipped weight from Ford. The race weights were different, the FR500's are lighter in race weight and have a smaller restrictor IIRC. The Boss 302R and S cars weigh more than the street cars do and make way less power because they are very dominant cars when "unbridled" (see the horse reference?! :clap2:).

The FR500 won a GS title prior to the 5.0, 2008 I believe.

I will look for the PDF with the weights in them, it is an old PDF. The current GT3 race weight for Mustang's is 2970lbs...

The current Cobra Jet is a 2900lb package...

There was no FR500R. It was the C (Grand-Am GS) and S (Mustang Challenge). In the Grand Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, The restrictors varied from nothing to of significance depending on the Balance Of Performance (BOP) to adjust the performance of the car. When they raced without restrictors, they probably made a little more power than the stock car due to no cats and an open exhaust.

I don't think the FR500C in Grand-Am GS trim ever weighed less than 3,150lbs. I'd like to see the PDF of the GT3 spec. Didn't know they ever got down to that weight.

New Mustang is suppose to be 3800lbs with V8? Heh, That's still lighter than My 2003 Passat W8 which weighs in at almost 3900lbs... when can I buy one?

Was viewing a recent post in this forum section titled: "200 lbs within reach..." that was initiated on 12-08-2013 -they had attached a video clip from Autoline Daily, March 2013. One of guests was Dave P. the 2015 Mustang chief engineer; he mentioned that the Mustang is 5 star rated for safety. The new "small overlap frontal impact" test (defined by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) is required for a five star rating in Model Year 2014. This 25% overlap test is a much more structurally challenging than the previous 40% overlap test. If the S550 Mustang is designed to meet this test, it will be substantively heavier than the previous model (but much more structurally sound in the event of a frontal crash).

My hope is that a significant portion of this extra weight will be offset by the extensive use of ultra-high strength steels in the chassis; which is now very common in the most recently redesigned vehicles from almost all manufacturers. Hopefully Ford is also considering laser welding at least part of the structure (instead of only spot welds), because laser welding is a superior joining method and requires less metal in the joints between metals stampings.

Reducing weight under these constraints is very challenging, particularly when trying to control costs. Other recent designs under somewhat similar constraints have been able to reduce weight from 50 to perhaps 150 lbs per vehicle, so there is hope.

I am willing to bet a fully loaded '15 GT will be 3600-3700lbs.
If I have to take a guess, a fully loaded GT will probably be around 3550lbs. The latest M4 which has about the same dimension if only slightly smaller weighs about 3400lbs so 3550lbs is not too unreasonable.
