Is cam control only an issue if you track the car or is there a benefit for someone in my situation?
Depends on the condition of your phasers. They have pretty loose tolerances. I like the 40 weight.

G2, 120mm on 93.

I don’t track her and rarely WOT but I def drive her hard.

Should I still put 50w as a precaution? Thinking mobile 1 super car which is 40w. Currently on mobile one 30w.

Thoughts?
I use 5W40 Motul. But I have not done an oil analysis yet. Waiting until I run E85 for a while before getting one done.

Ford designed 5W-20 when they reinvented the 302 Windsor into a low friction high output 5.0 in the mid 1980’s.
The notion 5W-20 is strictly an EPA oil is bunk.
The switch to 30W has everything to do with Coyote GEN3 GDI fuel dilution and Fords 10,000 mile expected drain intervals.

You will not notice a difference in how the car drives or feels as it relates to cam timing from phaser action due to oil viscosity lol. That I can guarantee you.

In theory he is right, the heavier oil adds stability to phaser action and theoretically allows for more precise cam timing.

In practice? You won't notice anything whatsoever.
It sounds as if there’s no real negative to putting 40w in over 30w but potentially positives.

Looking to do pop, but it only comes 0–40 W.

Any concern going 5 to 0 choose 40W?

and yet Ford changed the spec standard (back) to 30 around '21. Go look at the manuals and dip sticks at your next C&C and compare dates.

Nobody is going to harm their engine running a '20' on the street. But that spec was a temporary blip.
100% correct. And in Ford fashion, I believe the spec was changed early/mid production 2021, so there are some 2021’s with 20 on the oil cap and some with 30. At least as I recall based on some past threads.

My 2022 has 30 on the cap and I can provide pics if there are any non-believers. I’m seeing some replies to ghosts, so assuming there’s some on my ignore list in here.

0W30/0W40-5W40/5W50 is what should be in these motors. The 0W30 and 0W40 is fine for every day drivers that never see track time,. It will provide the boundary layer protection your high revving coyote needs at the expense of .000001% mpg... ;)

which Ford Powertrain Engineering department took 3 years to identify I guess. Normally you do the engineering BEFORE product rollout. :)

Wasn't too long after the Mach E came out when Ford changed to 30 weight. Could be the E offset CAFE enough Ford went for better engine protection.

pity they didn't notice they put contactors that were too small and liked to burn up under high current draw...

Does Ford Engineering operate under the principle that they don't do testing, except in production? What numpty is running the sh*tshow over there?

Temporary, as in from 2011 to 2021?

Hardly.

100% not correct. Every coyote's oil cap for 10 years said 5w-20. But you all are smarter than Ford's R/D department.

Do as you wish!! It doesn't matter anyway. There will literally be 0 difference in OP's motor wear regardless of what oil he uses.
