Paxton good to 850 on E85; if you want something more the JTB (about a grand more) is good to 1250 and also works well at lower hp (unlike some of the other large vortechs). I am in the process of going to the JTB, wish I would have started with it. I am also auto so can't comment on false knock with a manual as I've never had any. I did review several threads on here with people who had it and fixed it and applied some of the fixes during the install before ever running the car.
The crank thing happens NA, with turbos, with all brands of centris, with PDs; I wouldn't avoid one brand or setup because of that; it is the risk you take with modding the car.
