Bluetooth phone & car, turn phone's & car's wifi on?

I hate reading manuals!!!
No phones or bluetooth, this is all about your syncing & updating your Sync 3 through your home wifi system. First you need to connect your Sync 3 to your network. Once that is done you turn on auto updates and wait hours for nothing to happen. Only kidding, some people have had success. Most don't.

To connect to Wifi
  1. Turn on the SYNC 3 system. ...
  2. Connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network by going into Settings > Wi-Fi.
  3. Select your network and enter your password.
  4. Once connected, go back to the Settings screen and proceed to setup auto updates.

Phones can be used as wifi/internet connection.

Should be doable.

That's a big maybe. You need bandwidth and speed. I wouldn't trust a phone to do that. Either connect your car directly to your network or use usb/memory stick. The last thing you would want to do is brick your Sync system.

I use the WI-FI at work to update the stang. I have a high speed port in my office which is 15 feet from my parking spot. I don't daily the car, but I bring it here occasionally during a weekend to catch up paperwork and Sync takes care of itself. Most home systems are too slow or have a weak signal where the cars are parked.

As I said the Sync updates are 2Gb (maps are much more) so just not really feasible over WiFi. USB is really simple and far more reliable
Depends on the connection. I have normal residential connection, but where the cars park I can easily 150+ mb down.

So your SYNC has the most up to date version by updating over the Auto Update + WiFi without using a USB to update?

I, like others, have never been able to get SYNC in my 2018 to update over WiFi. Yes, the car is on my network, yes, it shows max (strong signal) being in garage and less than 20ft from location of signal ... and....

the thing just circled and circled and circled forever.... the same happened when I had my prior 2016 also.

I’ve also read in the fairly large SYNC thread in the other sub-forum on here that the car must be idling during an update - as in parked and running and that a large SYNC update could take at least or close to 1 hour.

So I’m kind of intrigued at how you’re successful with a WiFi update!

There is no answer. Some have it work most don’t. My wife’s Escape did, my Mustang doesn’t. Same network, same signal strength, same garage. Just turn off auto updates and forget about it.

I'm not sure what WiFi NIC the Mustang has but that would be an extraordinary download speed for any WiFi connection. More to the point I'm not sure Ford can push it out at that speed as whenever I have downloaded in the UK the download speed has been a fraction of that even over a wired 300Mbit fibre connection. Don't mistake theoretical connection speeds with actual download speeds

2GB is easy over wifi. I'm doing a 6.180GB download over wifi right now.

In your car?

Sync 3 has a mixed Wireless b/g/n single channel NIC and unless you are sat on the WiFi access point you will struggle to get more than 40Mbits/s. The Ford servers in UK seem to top out at about 3 or 4 Mb/sec download speed. That would get pretty boring watching that download, and then you still have another 20 minutes for the update to take place, all the time with the engine running.

Now, using a MIMO setup on a laptop or phone on Wireless ac is a completely different ball game.

I still suspect the Ford servers will be the limiting factor however.

Don't confuse Mbps with Mb/sec as well. WiFi connections are measured in Mbps and downloads in Mb/sec. There are 8 bits in 1 byte.

Just use USB if you value your time and sanity !

I was talking actual download speeds. I wasn't referring to the actual download speed of the car's APIM. I was referring to what I've verified my home network to be a capable of. I setup my own mesh network. I have 5 acres of land, so I wanted coverage reasonably far. I have a detached 2 car garage where both Mustangs park every night and a separate shop. It's nice to have my laptop in my shop and be able to stream whatever I want, not to mention yelling at Alexa to play music when I'm getting ready to throw wrenches at whatever I'm working on in the shop (currently a '95 Bronco on 6" lift and 35's).

Plugged into my switch (my cable router is bridged) is a different story. 400+ download has been verified. It also helps, being cable, that there are only two connection on the head unit that feeds my property. Of course we had to drop some cash t get them to run the cable, power the back up units and install the head unit - a 600ft run. But since I regularly have to connect to work from home and my wife regularly works from home it was worth it to us.
