"Automatic Updates" my A**.

Sure, the car has a modem. Sure, it does all sorts of online stuff. But, "Automatic Updates"? Really? As I sit here in hour 3 of the 15GB map download that needs to be stuck on a USB drive and then left in a running car for another hour.

At least my old BMW actually did get the maps automatically. Took days for the download sometimes, but it did it by itself and installed them without any input from me.

Do you really need the car to be running? I thought that they only told you to do that so the battery voltage didn’t drop to a level where the car shut everything down. If you put it on a charger, that would probably work around that issue. I know that our Rogue has an issue that I need to address with a flash drive and the instructions are to put an external 12V supply on, place the vehicle in accessory mode (with hazards on so that it doesn’t leave the mode after 10 minutes). Perhaps Ford has a similar methodology?

What map did it update you to? When I updated to 3.3 my maps stayed at 117 though they said it might do that even though it was updated. Now we also have a 2019 Edge ST and it has map 118 and she still got a notification that there was an upgrade available for $40. I don't want to update mine or hers if it stays at 118. Curiously both of our ESNs weren't what Ford has on file so I had to call to see why I was getting the error. They said it may be due to some changes they're making.

I wondered why I had to update maps through a usb too. They try to charge $40 for one when you can buy a $5 stick.
Still way cheaper then Volkswagen. They charge $200 for an SD card and force you to buy it if you want updates. With Android Auto these days its stupid.

I did the map updates today and it was done in 10 minutes.

Yeah, my ESN wouldn't work. I called Ford and they gave me something massively different for the "correct" ESN. Very strange.

Sync updates have been a PITA from the beginning. I gave up at 2.3. Works fine.

Maps. 20 minutes give or take all in.

Which usb port did you use?

The one on the dash under the screen. The one in the console had my music drive plugged in the whole time, but I had the satellite radio running while I was driving.
