i'm sure you will not listen but you should get some cerakote v-136 for the top a bottom of the pistons and c-110 for the skirts. should look like this. you can apply the coatings at home. about $90 total

Interesting never heard of doing that. What is the benefit?

The rings don’t actually spin around the piston groove but they do slowly orbit around the piston groove when the ring is unloaded during transitioning from TDC to BDC or flutter events.
Best practice is to orientate the end gaps to Fords recommended locations.

Spin, rotate, whatever they move. Do it however makes you feel fuzzy.

Now it’s being suggested you apply a coating at home that requires an oven when Cerakote states specifically not to use in an oven that will be used for food preparation afterwards.
Yikes

And when you pull it apart after running the engine, the ring gaps will be in a different place.

The only wrong way is to line them up.

Yep, we’ve covered that and I agree with you. My hang up is the reuse of the seated rings and making sure they ended up in the correct bore and clocked to Fords spec. at assembly. If new rings were being used I wouldn’t have engaged past the cylinder bore iron transfer picture.

Now that the pistons and rods have been removed once again, I’ll wager those rod bolts and nuts need replacing. I’ll also wager if the OP removed the piston and rods he didn’t map out the cylinder number locations.

Hopefully the rods are numbered.

Rods and pistons are all numbered. I think they may even have arrows for orientation from the previous owner but don’t know if that matters.

Good,
Now about using new rod bolts and nuts.
How many times have the existing rod fasteners been torqued and stretched to spec. ?
Any engine builder worth their salt will measure rod bolt stretch when installing new rod bolts.
Yours have been stretched one to many times.

Can’t remember if I just bought new ones but if I didn’t I’ll buy new ones. I don’t have the best measuring tools and don’t want to risk think they are okay.
