I've only got about 300 miles on my '16 GT, but the engine is a little noisy. I'm probably just extra worried about engine noise because of all the horror stories I've read/heard. Between the post oil change "igniter" tick and just ticking/knocking noise in general I'm a bit worried.

Most report their noises only show up when the cars are fully up to temp, so I'm wondering in slightly thicker/heavier viscosity oil may help. I'd imagine the main reason ford calls for 5w20 is for fuel mileage. The s197 track pack cars called for 5w50.....I'm thinking 5w30 may help quiet the engine just a little? I've got a long way to go before my first oil change (another theory is that changing oil too soon can be problematic) but I'm just thinking out loud

So...anyone use 5w30?

The only way to make sure is do an UOA or you are just guessing.
Some engines are just noisy.

I just filled mine up with Royal Purple 5W30.

Only drove it once after that so far though.

But, after reading this do you now think you can question Fords motor oil recommentions and will you want to use a different grade of oil? Dino and Syn not withstanding.

Sounds like everyone should have engine block heaters that would provide 212 degree oil temps at start-up.

No kidding, right? I always knew that the majority of wear came at start up, but I did not understand the characteristics of oil that helps to prevent it. If all engines had oil heaters that primed the bearings before start up, you would think they could last for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Yep, then you have the engine out lasting the rest of the car.

I have 5W-30 Synthetic oil left over from use in my Nissan and will use for my next oil change. Appearently from the article it has a much better shelf life over Dino oil anyway.

I'll be changing mine to 5W-30 synthetic when I do the first change. Mainly because I have two other vehicles that require that weight.....

Start wear is why i went royal purple. They sold me on the "coating" aspect.

"Royal Purple’s advanced additive technologies, such as Synerlec, enable its products to outperform leading synthetic and conventional lubricants. These unique chemistries strengthen the base oil for improved performance. They also create an ionic bond that adheres to metal parts for continuous protection."

I've heard nothing but bad stories about RP.

Anyways, oil weight definitely has come a long way. Before everyone thinks heavier is better but actually now the trend is lighter makes more sense.
Lighter oil flow better so it takes heat away from parts better. Before when engine manufacturing technology was not good, parts have huge tolerances, and heavier oil can make sure higher pressure is maintained in these huge gaps. Nowadays when parts are so tightly fitted and perfectly machined, lighter oil make more sense to take heat away faster.

But there is no perfect oil. Just as there is no perfect cooling system that would maintain everything in an engine cooled properly. If you live in a hot climate or run the engine hard, 5w30 or even 5w40 is recommended. If you live in a cold climate, 0w30 or even 0w20 can be used.

I run 0w40 in my new motor.

For a stock motor, I personally prefer 5w30.

I have never run the 5w20 in the modular engines, even after they changed the "oil cap" in the late 90's from 5w30, to 5w20 (out of nowhere - thanks CAFE)

I run Amsoil 10w30 full synthetic in mine. I also ran it I'm my 13 with no issues.
