Hi,

Would you recommend me switching my oil to 5w30 full synthetic?

Car: Gt premium 5.0 automatic 2015
Place: Caribbean
Weather: 80-95 degrees (all year) (semi hot climate)
Driving: Moderate - Hard (100 miles max per week)
Car temp: 205-220
Miles on the car: 25.000

Any advise or comments would help..

Thanks

I would recommend fully synthetic 5w20 or 5w30. So long as it is a good brand and not store branded you should be good with either one.

My options here are Pennzoil Platinum, Mobil One or Castor Oil. Which do you recommend?

My memory of discussions on whether or not to change to full-synthetic is that there is plenty of reason to do it, not much against.

On the other hand, I've read that changing viscosity might interfere with some engine functions that are viscosity-dependent. I'm not convinced, since the only mention I can find in the Driver Handbook is to go up a notch or two for track work and go back to recommende specs for street driving.

That is probably for fuel efficiency too.

Any one of those should be good to be honest. Pick your poison

Ford specs 5W-30 for the Coyote in Australia, and Ford speced 5W-50 for the Boss 302 for every day use. Those engines are basically the same internally as all other Coyotes. They will run and be fine with oil thicker than 5W-20, and 5W-30 is fine for street use.

I ran 5W-20 Mobil1 a few times then switched to 5W-30 Royal Purple. Anecdotally i've heard that 5W-20 is recommended for the 5.0 purely for emissions/fuel economy and that 5W-30 is a better oil for the motor.

I've put 6,000 miles on the current fill of 5W-30 Royal Purple (including a 4-day trip across the United States) and my fuel economy was in the 24-25mpg range. I was expecting worse with the heavier weight oil but this thing did pretty good!

So... 5W-30 will be fine, and Mobil1 or Pennzoil Plat will be about the same. You can't go wrong.

I talked to Ford Performance about what oil to use in an unmodified engine, mostly due to some people saying these cars need heavier weight oil, etc. Ford Performance said to me, what does it say on your oil fill cap? I told him 5W-20. He said, that's what it's designed to use. I said even on track days? He said yes, even on track days. So be guided by your oil fill cap.

Should have asked him why Ford specs 5W-30 for the Australian Coyote and 5W-50 for the Boss 302 Coyote for street driving. Seems CAFE really has their hooks into Ford.

More importantly, who at ford performance gave you such guidance?

I do think it's interesting that ford recommended 5w50 in the 11-14 track pack 5.0 and 5w30 in 2018+ for "track use", but as far as I can tell no such allowances for 15-17. I did run 5w30 in a supercharged 2015 f-150 5.0 making 640 rwhp for about 40k miles. Consumption over the 10k drain interval was negligible.
