did you measure the marked up cam-lobe and compared the height to the rest ? if they are the same, I'd polish the lobe and remeasure. but since you got new cams and nothing to lose might be worth a try if you're bored ha-ha.
I did get a replacement stock cam, turning the other into a lamp haha. May measure it out of curiosity before I do so.

Ehhh...Came looking for cam lobe wear as I was replacing my valve covers...and noticed some odd looking wear myself. Not far off from yours...but on more lobes. Nothing actually felt scratched though - every lobe was extremely smooth. I've never found any kind of metal shavings in the oil, filter or elsewhere and have had the car since (practically) new.

Oh, I'm not concerned about his current failure, that is simply a surface finish issue most likely. The rest of the motor of unknown history, tune, maintenance and use is why I wouldn't be running 5-20 in this car. The reason they go to 5-50 is because it causes less issue with the VVT control on track.
You're the only one I've seen mention a "surface finish" issue in this thread. Could this be all what I'm seeing? Or is something more at play?

@Optimum Performance, I have the same question...

Most of the lobes on my left side have that same looking "wear". Perhaps the right side too. I did the right side first and didn't notice it, but I wasn't looking for it at all... Just happened to register once I got a look at the left side.

I have never had any spikes in wear metals in the oil analysis. I think I'll switch to the 5W-30 since it sounds like Ford has updated that recommendation.

I went in to replace the phaser solenoids, but maybe that cold engine clatter wasn't coming from the solenoids after all. However it sounded exactly like solenoid pin smacking back and forth only a lot faster than I can shake them by hand.
