how much damage to the front end do you need to deploy an airbag? Yikes.

I thought the same thing. I googled and from what I am reading the air bags will not deploy if the car was not running. He never said it was, just that it was in neutral. If I am running back in the house I turn it off. That may be a reason they didn't. Just specualting from what I read. That damage I think would set it off.

Is airbag deployment reliant on someone being sat it the seat - hence no deployment ?

I don’t know, but it seems logical ?

The airbags will only deploy if the vehicle’s ignition switch is in “run”. If the passenger seat is unoccupied, the passenger bag will not deploy.
Additionally, if the seatbelt is not buckled, Ford does not fire the pre-tensioners… every other manufacturer does.
As far as the driver’s bag firing or not firing without an occupant, I have never had that circumstance.
I shall research and get back.

TECHNICAL DISCLAIMER
The 1998 Ford Escort will still deploy the bags if impacted for up to 6 minutes AFTER turning the key out of the “run” position.
(This is not a joke… Ford did this due to a lawsuit… Can anyone hazard a guess as to why 6 minutes?)

The hill was pretty steep, and my house is up the hill and across the street. As a test, I sat in my truck in the garage, put it in neutral, and took my foot off the brake. My truck was at 10mph before the front tires hit the street, and the grassy hill is twice as steep as my driveway.
That sucks OP. I would be devastated if this was my car.
Good luck going forward.

I might have missed it, but if on an incline/hill on the driveway, did/does the emergency brake not work?

Sorry to hear. At least no one was hurt and you don’t live near water.

Sheesh that sucks to see

Obviously not OP but I would guess he came outside to fire it up, disengaged the parking brake, pushed in the clutch went to start it up and realized he didn't have the key, jumped out to go get it and didn't re-engage the parking brake.

Just a guess on my end though, definitely sad to see. Oak trees are very unforgiving.

When I had collision repair facility I would buy cars like this every chance I could. Clean title, looks bad to the layman, but made a ton of money on the backside. Hits like the OP’s, light rolls, and hail. Almost all of them still had full factory warranties. When I/we were done you couldnt tell the car had ever been repaired. There are some very good body techs that still take a lot of pride in what they do, paint tech’s as well. The funniest part is I always had a list of people that were looking and wanted specific models. Just about every car was sold before it was even purchased. Hope it works out for the OP. Will still be a beautiful car.

I worked at a dealership 10+ years ago - there was a 08-09 or so GT500 sitting out back behind the body shop - the RH side was all caved in at the door, car was wrapped in plastic.

Story goes - guy bought car, paid cash, immediately slid it into a tree with no insurance. Car wasn't registered or anything. Owner never did anything with the car.

Car sat behind the body shop until 2011-2012 - the body shop manager called the owner up, told him "you owe me 8,500 dollars in storage fees, I'll give you 8,500 for the car. Deal. body shop owner now owns a squashed GT500.

So they went to the junk yard, cut a V6 Mustang body in half. They cut the GT500 in half at all the factory spot welds, etc. Then they put the two together, reassembling just like from the factory. Car needed a passenger seat, door panel, door, and a new dashboard. The dent in the roof on the GT500 popped back out once all the tension from the bent side was released.

The car looked and drove like a brand new one, had a clear title, etc. The owner had a photo album full of pictures he would show people.

From that point on, I never felt that "it's never the same" thing ever again.

2017 GT350 now gone to a great home.
Man, you have some steep driveways on that street. You can see them behind the tow truck in your photo. I’m surprised it wasn’t going faster. I hope you’re not in the snow belt and need to get up those driveways in the winter.

I'll echo others, don't get your heart set on selling it yet. Find a good body shop, let them do their thing. I'd the same thoughts when mine took a hit, with the same notions of "it's never the same," but since getting it back from a good (albeit slow...) shop and going for a nice, long drive... I've had no desires to flip it, and noticed no differences in drivability or otherwise.

Get it fixed right, at a place with good reviews. Even better if they work on a lot of sport cars. Once you've got the keys back in your hands, take it for a spin, same as you would if all this hadn't happened. If you REALLY still feel it ain't right, then you can consider selling it.

Not a very clever guess… but I’ll be glad to answer.
A plaintiff sued Ford because they parked their car and were listening to a song on the car’s radio… as they were parked with the ignition switch in accessory, they were impacted by a vehicle and injured. The airbags did not deploy since the key was not in “run”. Ford decided to make the next year Escort would keep the airbag system active via the battery for 2 songs. Ford researched and found out that the average song is 3 minutes… they gave future professional plaintiffs 2 songs.
This is not internet research…. This is info from Ford!
