That was a good convo starter thread man... i filled up yesterday at a quick check, not sure what "tier" gas that is but 93 was 5.23/g. sucked but i left there banging 1,2,3 and it felt great :)

its all geo political BS around the world taking blame, theres plenty of oil / reserves....
when you bang gears, do you chirp? i can’t chirp mine at all. when i slam to 2nd from high RPM first, it doesn’t let me, even with trac control off. like it’ll slam into second but even if you dump the clutch it doesn’t chirp. is that bc i have that auto rev matching feature on? i know that helps downshifts, but maybe it tries to smooth out upshifts too, because that’s what it feels like it’s doing, smoothing it out as if you never dumped the clutch but let it out at a normal pace…hmm..

I have an EcoBoost running 93 with a 91 octane stage 1 Cobb tune. Getting 19.5+mpg even with spirited driving. I won't put anything less than 93 in it as long as I run a tune.

As long as you are on a stock tune the car will adjust to whatever octane you put in it. To get the maximum performance you'll need to run the 93. If you're willing to sacrifice a small amount of power run whatever you want. The lower the octane the more noticeable the loss will be. Even using 87 you'll still have plenty of power and no harm to the car.
For me I generally notice the bump up when using 93 but not so much the loss when using 87.

it chirps but im hangin each gear out, 7k shifts. its pretty much always in normal drive mode with TC. It dont get wild, its a quick chirp but 3rd is hard to get sometimes. i wonder if its the 87 vs 93???

At the gas station today:
87 Octane: $4.80
89 Octane: $5.20
93 Octane: $5.40

So, roll in on fumes at put 16 gallons in, the spread is from $76.80 with 87 to $86.40 with 93. Your choice if you think the $10 is worth it.

And, for reference, thanks for nothing, Joe.

Good post, because it goes to show, as high as the gas prices are - when presented that way, IF the tank is empty and needs 16 gallons, is $10 savings a lot, or a little based on one's financial situation?

For instance, if in the example above and mindset that the driver needs a full 16 gallons, there's only a $0.20 cent difference between 89 and 93 octane - which is a total $3.20 savings (or expense).

Obviously not many will need to do a 16gal refill - so even if it where a few gallons, you're now talking less than $10 or the $3.20.

Sure TOTAL fueling cost has gone up - agreed - but even if prices per gallon were lower as they were before the so called rapeflation - and the same basic spread exists - again, is a $10 or $3.20 still a pain point?

It might only be $10 difference on a tank. But I DD mine and use about 1.5 tanks per week if I do just a little bit of fun stuff on the weekend. That works out to be $60/month I don't really need to spend to drive most of the time in traffic. Especially when everything else is going up in price as well. We'll everything except my paycheck...

nah, on 93 i can’t either. i wonder if it’s the auto rev match, because to me it feels like whenever you upshift and give it gas, it sounds as if the car is gradually letting off the clutch for you, like rather than you dumping it and being bumpy….as if making it easier and less bumpy shifting. i really wonder if it’s the computer.

Just run 87 if you're trying to keep costs down. Unless you're flat footed full throttle a ton or are competing on the clock on a closed course, who cares if the car is 10hp slower.

I just drove 2k miles last week on an E85 tune and paid between 3-4$ a gallon. Downside is I only get ~12-13 mpg on the highway, cause my car has a lot of extra drag.

Until my POJ DD craps out, my GT is not. So, for now, the 93 octane tune remains.

Guys, quit complaining! Here in Europe, because of Putin's walk in the park, current price is 7.15$ per US gallon. Before the "special operation" it was 5.24$ per US Gallon. And these are regular prices (meaning 87 octane US standard). It can only get worse from this point onwards...

For the last 3 weeks I have poured 427.85$ worth of gas in the Mach 1, which is exactly 5 full tanks.

--Edit--
Just to make it clear - total gas for the last month I loaded is 65.77US Gallons. Based on the price $4.80 per gallon, that would make $315.70. So the difference is $112.15.

Hundred dolla bill, ya...!

Put 87 in it and drive it with your foot on the floor all the time and let us know your results.

My wife keeps begging me to put 87 in, but I told her that I won’t give in to Adolf Putin. Besides, I live in Texas, we don’t back down here.

I don’t have a choice. Can’t run less than 91 when pushing 650whp.
Got mighty scared in the middle of Nebraska yesterday when we could only find 87. I was about to buy octane booster when the cashier at autozone said a station 6 miles away had 91. Phew. He said it was the only one within 50 miles. Never thought finding 91 would be an issue.

This has been asked and answered a thousand times on here but lets go one more time.

You can use 87. It is the “minimum” that Ford says you can use. It will cost some performance and possibly some MPG’s. It might also cause knocking in hot humid weather.

89 might be the sweet spot but you have to try it.

91/93 will be the best and what Ford uses for HP and MPG ratings.

I see you are in NJ. The only state that allows non members to buy from Costco. 93 octane and top tier. Find one and use it.

This was the Costco I used when I lived in NJ.

I understand and track all you are saying above. I am looking for a site to corroborate that Ford really does jack up the octane for testing. They may well, and in 2021 it could make a big difference. I have been reading threads similar to this since 1985, when a car that ran fine on 87 did NOT benefit at all from 93 because the tune was static. If an S550 has the brains to tune itself to take advantage of 91 or 93 octane, I'd like to confirm that. Mine seems to run fine on the Owner's Manual recommended 87, but "fine" is all relative, right?
