I’ve posted this in the past….FWIW I don’t trust Carfax…Back in 2014 my wife’s new Scion Tc was involved in two minor accidents requiring insurance claims & body work both times. After the second accident I decided to trade it in for a new 2015 Ecoboost for her.The dealer put the Tc on the lot with a clean Carfax noting only a recent oil change. The 2015 EcoBoost has since been upgraded to a 2021GT. Maybe things have changed since.
Yes Carfax doesn't manage to get all the data on cars (they say as much on their site)

I had a $500 mirror repair show up once, followed by $14,000 front end repair that never showed up.

But it's a blessing and a curse. I love Carfax when I'm buying a car, if I'm selling a car that has repairs I want them bankrupt and dragged across hot coals.

So, I’m looking at this 2016 Mustang GT, which was side swiped and written off and is now up for auction in a few days. It has 80k miles and during the 9 years it had 5 owners. How big of a red flag if any is this ? Service records seems pretty good. I also added carfax

Side swiped, 5 owners and 80k Mike's later 🤔 if you are getting it for $1,500.00 get it but not a penny more...

Something to think about. All is approximate but gives you some insight.

KBB for 2015 GT premium with 80k miles says ave value $20k.
For the insurance company to total that your looking at $10-$15k worth of damage (using 50%-75% value). Certainly there are insurance/bodyshop folks here that can be more accurate.
This might mean there is quite a bit of damage you may not see.

Exactly, once you dig into these things and see how deep the damage goes, it becomes a money pit.

The only thing is you can save some money is buying used parts to do the repairs.

Used parts now cost what new parts cost 5 years ago. A used part is always a question mark. How many miles on it, is it ready to fail, was it properly maintained. I know, I bought used parts in the past and it is a gamble as to their reliability. Besides, the OP's posted pic of the car needs a rear quarter panel. Removing one and keeping it straight from the donor car takes a lot skill. Better to buy that new, if you ask me.

I think you're a nut for considering this car and a nut for thinking there isn't way more damage than just what you can see in a picture. I think all your plans you posted here sound fucking nuts.

Auction ended today. What was the sale price? Were you going to ship it from PA to IL?

Yea, for a vehicle to be totaled out, the damage has to be at least 72%-75% of ACV…. Once it hits that threshold it’s totaled.

If it was a simple sideswipe it woud not be a total loss.

To do a rear 1/4 replacement, it’s an easy $7k-$8k…. That’s not including anything else other than the R&R of that rear 1/4, getting the new in place along with prep/paint.

I would be willing to bet there’s under carriage damage, chassis damage, rear axle damage, and maybe even other damages not seen in photos. Sis the air bags blow? That’s more costly replacements.

Looking at the photos shows that the car has B pillar damage. It's far worse than a side swipe. That car needs major work. 10k to buy plus 10k to fix it. Now you could find one undamaged for 20k. Best to just part the thing out. And you could make your money back.
