Thanks Team Beefcake for hooking me up with some insurance for my engine with the MMR Billet oil pump. This went pretty well, but I do have some O.E.s (Operating Experience it's what we call in the Nuke world when we learn something to pass on) 1st remove your oil dip stick tube prior to removing the valve cover, I didn't and broke it causing FME potential (Foreign Material Exclusion). 2nd the instructions I found on line were not completely accurate for this year, so try and get the latest revision. At no point did the Data Matrix line up on my cams, in the end I used Old School TDC on #1 knowledge. 2nd save yourself some time and just cut the a/c belt off, they're only $15 and they're NOT a serpentine belt, it's a special stretch belt. 3rd I used Old School stuff again for putting the balancer back on, knowing what I know now I could have been more prepared. The ones you rent from the local parts store are not long enough to reach our threads. I couldn't find 12 mm x 1.5 all thread, if you can find this, that would be the cheapest, easiest and fastest way to install, but not the only way. I used heat, the glow in the pic is a reflection not glowing metal, I was still able to grab with my bare hands as the heat is concentrated on the hub, then with lubricated threads on the stock crank bolt I was easily able to draw the balancer on, all the spark plugs were out and the engine never moved, so that shows how easy it went on, as you draw it on you will run out of threads requiring to remove bolt and add washers till fully seated. Next tip make sure your inch lb torque wrench fits your range, mine didn't. And last I will not give specifics on torquing, but just because you're given a number and or method, rely on feel & skill for the final decision. Remember this is an aluminum block. And I won't go into specifics on cam timing as it's too easy to be miss understood. For me it was just an engine with 3 extra cams. There's a lot on this subject and just too much to txt about, hands on and in person is the best way to teach and answer questions. Remember you can bend a lot of valves and cause a lot of damage, costing way more than paying a professional to do it in the first place. There's a reason why shops charge what they do to perform this job.
Oh...how'd it come out...well I started it up ran for 20 minutes then drove 250 miles to NMCA Norwalk and ran 11.80s for 2 days then drove back, now it's time for a CJ Intake & E85...with help from Lund to make it all work.
