Hey guys I just got a 2015 mustang gt. I have everything ready to install.

Catback
Long tube headers with mid pipes.
gt350 manifold
jlt intake

Now my question is, should i replace the oil pump gears? my car is going to be tuned at 8k rpms.

Me and my brother changed his pump gears on his stang and it was a pain in the behind to disassemble everything just to get to those gears. I want to try and avoid that job but if I have to I will do it.

Opinions? Thank you.

You should not need them if you are staying NA and don't plan to bounce off the rev limiter. They usually fail from shock, not from revving high. The shock of bouncing off a limiter, the shock of bouncing off a 2 step, stuff like that.

Im on a CJ manifold+FBO+nitrous+HPT rev patch+8k rev limit and don't have any issues

Yeh, I mean it's anyone's guess if/when they could fail but for the most part, it seems that if you're not going F/I, you should be ok.

Why Ford couldn't use a higher quality part and simply charge a few more bucks for the car, is beyond me. I blame the bean counters...

The rev limiter on the car is 7000, but the car will be tuned so it can rev up to 8k rpms. Yes the car is going to stay NA for now. I just dont know how strong the stock OPG is.

If you drop one from 4ft in the air it will shatter. There is video on it, but on the car doing what it was designed to do it will be fine as long as you avoid shocking it. Aggressive downshifts, bouncing off your limiter, or bouncing off a 2 step during a launch will all strain it. Doesn't mean it will fail instantly, only that it could lead to a pre-mature failure faster.

If you mostly go to Mexico for your action you will be fine with out OPGs, if you do a lot of 2 step clutch dump launches at the track then you might want to upgrade them.

I dont beat on the car at all. I mostly stay under 5k rpms, i go from work to my house and thats it. On occasion me and my brother go to the races and have alittle fun, probbaly race 3-6 times and thats it. I dont really like to race from the dig.

Can someone explain to me what "shocking it" is?

Nitrous is definitely a worry. All that instant torque hits hard. That is the shock you're describing.

Although a pain, it is cheap insurance, your modifications raise the RPM potential of your engine also which can produce additional stress on the gears. Obviously we are biased as we have seen far to many gears break ruining a engine which is why we developed gears for the Ford engines over a decade ago. So yes, we would suggest changing them. Shoot us a PM and we can help you out with a good deal!

Best of luck either way!

Should not need them if you set limiter at 8000 but shift at 7500-7600. Power peaks at 7200 on every GT350 manifold dyno I've ever seen. Normally you should shift a few hundred RPMs past peak for optimum acceleration but shifting at 8000 is likely about the same as shifting at 7300-7400 on the stock manifold which peaks at 6500-6600.

The instant torque isn't the issue. It it coming on/off/on/off/on/off/on/off like it would if you were bouncing off a rev limiter at 8k rpm or a 2 step/WOT box during a 5k clutch dump launch, that is a lot of stress on the OPG.

I see a lot of talk about this, but don't see many failures....

It's personal preference. We have many guys with stock opgs and many that replace them

The answer I give everyone is if you have the ability and funds, little bullet proofing never hurts

Let me know if we can help at all

Yeah and while your down there do billet crank gears as well. What many may not know is the crank bolt which has to be removed during this upgrade is a one time use only bolt so when you remove it you must replace it with a new one. I recommend the arp bolt, costs $37!
