I have read a lot of bad stuff about design problems with the 10R80, specifically CDF drum failure due to grooves being worn into it by the F clutches and a bushing that moves causing a loss of pressure. The newer transmissions have been redesigned to fix this, but I have a 2018, the first year the 10R80 came out, and I am worried that I am destined for trouble. I have 70K miles on the car and wonder if anyone out there has this early type of transmission, with more miles than I have, and it is still shifting properly. I am in a quandary as to whether I should sell it while it is stiff shifting good or hold onto it and hope for the best. I would like to keep it for another 2 years, which would mean approximately 20K more miles on the trans. Not sure what I would buy next, but it will not have a 10R80 in it or a MT82 six speed as I don't like them either, already had 2 of them. The Dark Horse has a Tremec trans but I am not going to spend $60K+ just to get that trans. I'm too close to this problem to have an objective opinion, yours would be appreciated. I'm figuring about a $7K repair bill to rebuild the trans if it gives out.

Agree with 13 , 70 k It's reassuring to hear folks are getting the milage upwards of 80 to 90 k from a Performance application , and then some die earlier.
I'm at 8 k . 2021 Mach

I had one of my employees clock over 115k on his 2018 before he traded it in on a Mach 1 last year. And according to him it had never had a issue anywhere on the car. mind you his was all Cali freeway driving.

Would you consider CA freeway driving stop-and-go driving? Just kidding, that's good to know, I feel better now. I don't beat on mine and changed the filter at 30K, and did a flush and fill around 55K, so it has been well taken care of.

With any auto trans. Heat is it's weakness. Keep it cool and it will last

My '18 Ecoboost convertible has 114k miles on it. 4 years of that was commuter traffic into and out of downtown Atlanta traffic during rush hour both ways. Before it became mine it served a year as an Enterprise rental in Florida. I've driven it on several 500 to 1200 mile road trips. Since February of 2023, when I retired, it gets driven much less. Maybe 50 to 200 miles per week with the occasional road trip. I don't race or track the car but enjoy some spirited driving. Granted it's not a GT but the transmission has (knock wood) never given me a moment of trouble. I can't say the same thing about the headgasket...

Whenever I'm stuck in bumper to bumper traffic (every day seems like) I shift it into neutral. This helps keep the trans temp down by not fighting with the brake pressure. In my mind it should also keep the wear on the clutches down as well.

Ahhh Atlanta rush (3)hour. I do NOT miss that at all. If you know Atlanta traffic, you know this is one of the worst case scenarios for an auto trans and for anyone prone to road rage. One of the major reasons I left.

Depends on the tune more than anything else. And fyi just because you’re using popular-tuner fill-in-the-blank doesn’t mean they *really* understand how the 10r80 is controlled or that you’re getting a tune that maximizes trans reliability. Almost no one understands this.

If you are not racing the car and beating on it, it will be fine. Mine is in my F150 (My Mustang is a manual) and it is pulling way more weight, towing and I race it some at the track (It has a Whipple Stage 2). I serviced it at 25K miles and not one issue to date. Even took it to SickWeek and raced it all week and it was flawless. I am running the Whipple Stage 2 tune. Keep it cool and keep the fluid fresh and it will last. If you have not ever serviced the trans AND you want to drive it for 2 more years with no worries? Do a trans service. It is not that hard to do yourself. Don't just drain and refill or do a "flush", actually drop the pan, change the filter, fill with fresh to the proper level and she'll be fine. It is IMPERATIVE you get the trans up to 208 degrees to do the final trans level check else you will not get a proper reading.

As a side note, how many of you paddle shift?

I watched an interesting vid on YouTube where they compared the 10R80 against the last two Ford F150 trans versions.

The 10R80 came up with the most particulates, wear, shavings, etc., basically because it shifted more and more shifting means more wear. (according to the vid) I only have about 27k on my 2020 PP1, but do run it through the gears at least once every time I drive it.

Sometimes if I'm in stop and go, I'll paddle shift just to reduce the amount of automatic shifts, but curious what others do.
