Actually, it sounds as though it is working as designed. IIRC, the owner's manual even might specify the amount of time that it takes for it to "decide" that you are finished with manual mode, and go back to regular old automatic mode. So it seems to me, that Ford may have provided different means to achieve Sport mode, and that only confuses us!

If my info is correct (and I apologize if it is not and welcome correction), then it seems that the solution is rather straightforward and simple:

  • Put the lever in 'S' on demand as needed for the situation. The car will rev up and down with upshifts and downshifts.
  • Put it back in 'D' as soon as you want the car to take over again, especially for the upshifts.
  • If you use the paddle - even just once - it assumes you are boss and will obey.
Think of the lever as a very simple "gear shift". Grab 'S' and punch it for sudden on-demand accelaration and aggressive shifts (such as passing, stoplights, twisty roads). "Shift up" to 'D' is for returning to mellow automatic shifts, i.e. when the high-performance requirement is over.

The car will do what you "say" and not what you "mean", LOL.

Some further elaboration (forgive me) ...
There was another thread recently that speculated that no difference in rpm/shift behavior could be detected whether using the lever or the toggle switch for Sport mode.
So another approach is to use the Toggle with 'D' to get fully automatic aggressive shifts. When you tire of that, flip the toggle back to Normal.

I think the key is for you to experiment without touching the paddle. Use the lever instead.

(The sound of the downshift blip in Sport mode was another great reason I opted for the automatic!)

I am so sick of people pissing about gas mileage in what driving mode they are in. I didn't buy a 5.0 sports gas for gas mileage. I could give shit about mileage per gallon... drive the freaking car!!!!

I think the OP (altjx) was asking specifically about the auto trans behavior while in Sport Mode. Yes, steering assist, traction control, etc also changes (and for all Premium cars), but he wanted to ask about shift points, lag, etc. while his automatic trans was in Sport mode.

My (lengthy) posts were narrowed to this aspect, and did not address mpg, nor did OP bring up mpg.

Forgive me, but I think the responses from manual trans owner's are not fully on topic. And I must say that on this forum sometimes manual trans owners don't always fully appreciate that automatic owners are enjoying a transmission that can exhibit "multiple personalities", which come with additional nuances as to their behaviors.

I, for one, have ordered a GT Premium automatic, and I plan to spend for DIY PP type mods later. I really anguished long and hard over EB vs GT, and then again for AT vs MT. I even changed my order twice -- from EB to GT, and then from MT (PP) to auto! I am trying to get a "wolf in sheep's clothing" type of car, which when you think about it, describes EVERY Mustang ever made.

you should read some of the discussions on the UK sites about MPG, as i often say, if you are worried about saving pennies, then you should not have a 5 litre motor.
When i done my 3000 mile trips round Europe in the S197, people said it will cost you a fortune in petrol, worked out cheaper then hiring a car

Is the automatic rev matching a feature that is only available on the premium cars or is it also on the base GT automatic?

I just wish you could set it to start in a specific mode. Sport+ is what I drive most of the time...track next. only normal when in crappy stop and go traffic sometimes after work.

I love using engine braking, especially on the curvy country roads I live around. It's fun being in the power band when coming out of a sweeping apex too. So fun. In drive it will upshift before I even exit the turn. So I am in sport a lot until I get to the long stretches of freeway, and even then if there are traffic lights I find myself back into sport to hold gears. I have noticed no loss in MPG from going to a more heavy use of sport, it's all about your right foot.

The fact I should have gotten a manual at this rate isn't lost on me, however, I'd rather have the option for automatic and not take it than not having it at all.

I also only drive it on Sport. MPGs don't really seem to change for me, I'm averaging exactly 18.0MPG according to the computer.

Just slip the shift knob into "S" instead of "D" and you're now in Sport Mode with automatic rev matching + other bonuses. Hold the traction control button down for several seconds and TC and stability control will turn off too. That's part of my routine before I go anywhere unless it's raining. If you want to be in complete control of your car with no assistance from the ecu, that's what you gotta do.

If I'm just cruising on the interstate ill leave it in normal, maybe set the cruise control. Normal more if in traffic too of course. Otherwise it's track mode with shifter in S - just way more fun that way.

I stay in Sport or Track modes.

I use normal for rain mode. With traction control it is good enough for me.

My 2015 GT Perf Pack is better behaved in the rain than my 95 Cobra is(95 cobra has Maximum Motorsports sport/track coil overs with 3.73s and eaton helical locker). Compared to the snap oversteer I can get from my 95 my 15 is downright tame.

Throttle response in sport mode is the bare minimum of where this car needs to be.

Cool. Thanks for the info. :)

So I assume you have a base GT, as well?
