Does any other high performance car even come close to the Mustang GT in regards to cost to own/bang for buck?

These 22 cars are the most economical to own

The sticker price on your car is only the beginning of what it really costs to own that auto — something that savvy shoppers should take into account when considering whether they got a deal or not.

According to data released on Thursday by auto site Kelley Blue Book, the average five-year-cost to own a new 2015-model car — this takes into account the depreciation (what you paid for the car vs. what you could sell it for in five years; roughly 40% of the cost), expected fuel costs (about 25%) and insurance (about 10%), as well as finance fees, maintenance and repair costs, and state fees (each about 5%) — is $50,781. But there’s a huge range in what it costs to own a new car, with some cars topping $105,000 to own over five years and others falling well below $30,000.

The fact that these costs to own vary greatly means that budget-conscious consumers need to look well beyond the sticker price when buying a new car. “If I could tell consumers one thing when evaluating a car to purchase, it’s that a car that might have a higher initial purchase price could end up being a better deal for your pocketbook over the next five years,” says Dan Ingle, vice president of vehicle valuations for Kelley Blue Book. That’s because depreciation, fuel costs, insurance and other variables can make the costs to own even very similar cars very different.

In part because of their low initial costs and often lower fuel and insurance costs, subcompact cars have some of the lowest costs to own of any cars, often well under $30,000 over five years.

But, of course, people usually buy a car based not just on cost, but also on their car preferences (hey, luxury is pretty darn nice), so MarketWatch has broken down the cost-to-own analysis by category, so you can see the lowest cost-to-own cars based on your personal taste in autos.

Camaro SS is comparable in price (roughly) and performs equally as well, or faster around a track with their 1LE vs GT PP. Otherwise, no.

It's also more expensive to maintain since most of the non-engine parts have to get shipped from Australia.

It's been established that this isn't always the case as the GTPP has shown better times on a few tracks not involving pure grip AND the bulk of the 1LE performance is due to the tires and tires alone. Through the same tires onto the GTPP (285 square) and I'll bet money it runs away from the 1LE.

The 1LE is $5,000 more than the PP...

A Camaro is a couple thousand more and based on an all around comparison not as good of a value, IMHO. Fractions of a second on a track is not worth trading for real world driving on the street, where 99.9% of driving is done. Track times are great for magazine articles.

Drive both and see what you like.

like the motor-trend comparison just look at the difference in tires. there's the reason for any differences in lap times.. even in acceleration look at how much better the tires are on the carmaro and the mustang STILL beats it.

And like ive said for YEARRSSS!!!!!! its not a true car comparison unless both cars have the same tires.. if i was in charge of car magazines you best bet id be damn sure to have the same tires on both cars. that is the first thing i look at in car comparisons which car has the better tires..

49.5? They'd really be blown away on price with a base PP GT.

Base v6 stang is a much better value than the gt. And would give you 90% or more of the performance of the gt.

The problem is that the auto manufacturers supply the cars being tested, and they make you sign an agreement to leave the cars as is, from tires, wheels, and brake pads.

The best way would be if Motor Trend or Road and Track had enough money to purchase each vehicle being tested, then things can be more controlled.

Lastly, auto manufacturers tune the final suspension setup on a specific tire, so a socially perceived better tire might not directly result in better laptimes if all other items are equal. If was obvious before Motor Trend ever did the '15 Mustang GT PP vs Camaro 1LE test, I knew the 1LE would win based on the tires alone. If we want a more equal test, we need the suspension and wheels/tires from the GT350 on the GT PP.

To me, the Mustang's most direct competitor right now is the Lexus RCF, though the RCF makes more power.

The cost is 5 year cost to own. So that includes all gas, tires, oil changes, etc. On top of the cost of the car.

Love my GT, but I'm a bit skeptical as I don't think any other high performance car holds it's value like a Subaru STi.

I had an 08' WRX, paid $23,500, drove it for 4 years, 65,000 miles, and sold it to a dealership for $16,500 and that is pretty typical.
