Oil change!

Oil change today. I used to measure my success or failure by the size of the oil spill in the driveway, now it's the number of times I have to climb back out from under the car. Today started decent until I got to the filter. Wrong size socket 2x to get the 7mm trap door screw out. Thought I had wrong filter wrench and my selection of extension and ratchet were bad, cost me another 2x. Then on top of that ended up with an almost dinner plate size spill next to the dedicated pan I had under the filter. 2021 GT 15k miles. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30, Motorcraft FL500S.

Oh, I've had plenty of practice. Guess I need to make notes of what tools to haul under there with me.

Makes me sound like no fun, but I lay tools on the ground for each car and take hostage photos of them so I can grab the right stuff the first time.

That sounds like a lot of oil to loose but it does depend on how you drive. I loose 1/2 litre over 10k klm. I'm using Penrite 5w40. If I drive it hard, it'll burn more for sure. From what I understand of these engine's it's nothing to worry about, just keep it topped up.

I add about a half quart at around 2,000 miles. I have a seperator in a drawer just for the oil change tools since that's a more common task.

For just daily driving, and not pounding on it on the highway, I would say that is a lot. If you do constantly accelerate hard, downshift, etc...drive it like you stole it, then I wouldn't worry too much, but I would probably send an oil analysis into a reputable company (Not Blackstone). If you track it, I wouldn't stress too much. But would probably change oil more often than 2000 miles.

My engine was letting go, and I knew it. Lots of crap in the oil and filter. Sent them a sample because I had suspected they weren't particularly good. Response back I got was "You can probably do a few more track days on this oil, it looks great!"

If you go through my build thread, you will see the glitter in the oil. It looked like a snow globe. When I questioned them on this, they said "oh, well we only measure particles that you can't see with your eyes." Well I know what standard deviation and probably distribution is, so I know if I can see particles, there should be smaller particles in a ratio with the large ones.

Since then, I've gone a different route. They are probably great for daily drivers, people trying to get longevity out of their oil. But I wouldn't trust them for any failure related testing.

I'm not convinced of any one company yet. Been sending samples to quite a few, including a local shop here in Houston. I used to say SPEEDiagnostix, but again, not a lot of confidence in them yet.
