In a very basic explanation of oil a 0w-50 starts out as a 0w that only thins to a 50 grade when hot.

Same with 40, 30 and 20 or whatever the hot grade is.

A 5w-xx starts out as a 5grade cold, thicker than a 0w and only thins to the hot grade. This is why I used to only use single grade oils in high performance engines.

Oil technology has improved to the point I will use multi grades.

I still wonder if using a 20w-50 would be ok in the coyote due to the heavier base oil.

I asked one of them to explain multi-viscosity to me in 6th grader terms so I could do the same for customers. Here's what he told me: A 10w30 oil is neither 10 weight or 30 weight. The additives give the lubricant the characteristics of 10 or 30 weight oil as it heats and cools. And everything in between. It doesn't go straight from 10w characteristics to 30, it's gradual.

So, I asked, if I mix a quart of 5w30 and 10w30 do I have a lubricant with the characteristics of 7.5w30? The answer was yes.

I haven't worked in the industry but have studied it extensively. The easiest way to understand is my explanation in my above post.

Some boutique oil suppliers do exactly what you have stated and blend several "weights" to get their specific number.

I use euro spec 0w40 in everything
