Mobil 1, sadly, isn't what it used to be. Their regular versions no longer use a synthetic base stock. It's not even legally synthetic in other countries. That's why you see the "European" versions where it is actual synthetic and carries a different API certification. So, if using Mobil 1, you want the European version or possibly the Extended Performance version.
WoW!
For real?

I hadn't heard that...
Thanks!

I run 5w30 PUP during the winter as a daily driver, and then switch over to 0w40 PUP in the summer as I do some more spirited driving and an occasional track day.

2020 GT.
Hm, does the 0w40 help? I run 5w30 PUP even in the track but I wonder if swapping would be better.

Quote of the century. Can we sticky this?
Dude’s on here claiming you’re providing information that could cause harm (which you didn’t so not sure where he came up with that), when he’s the one telling people it’s ok to run an engine without oil for several hours? Like WTF

I like the 40w at op temps but I don't like the 0w at cold start and warm up.

The waters are super muddy when it comes to what is synthetic vs conventional.
That is for sure!

If we were to use the need for the entire base stock (minus additives) to be a synthetic material as the litmus test, I think the following oils would not meet the definition...

Motorcraft
Mobil 1 (regular versions)
Castrol Syntec (regular versions)
Pennzoil Platinum (Penn Ultra Platinum I believe does)
Amsoil OE (Signature does)

I believe the following would meet the definition...

Mobil 1 European formula
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum
Amsoil Signature
Driven Racing DI, HR, XP
Redline Full Synthetic

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm not an expert. Just someone that researches the subject a bit. Also, I left out a ton of oils, so feel free to add to the lists.

1, I never said that, 2, it's not okay to run an engine for several hours without oil. I also did not say that. Learn to read bud I let it DRAIN for several hours I didn't not DRIVE it for several hours. Why twist words when it's clearly written there for all to see. I don't get why keyboard warriors think they can lie when it's literally so easy to prove them wrong

Except you did say that, I see you just edited your original post to erase it (yes, everyone can see if you edited a post). You originally stated you drove halfway across the state before you noticed the oil light wouldn’t turn off. Maybe that was a typo, maybe not, I wasn’t actually there but that’s what you originally said. And you did state that running an engine with no oil is no big deal, a few people quoted you saying such. Don’t alter your posts then come back and say you never said it, that’s some shady shit man. Just own it and move on

I really didn't want to wade into this but...this is too much.

You posted that you drove it for several hours before you edited it later. You also said running without oil "ain't a big deal" before editing that out as well.

I agree, but you did exactly that.

My philosophy is that as I get better and run the car harder, I see higher temps and want to run something a bit thicker. Usually it's recommended that you step up to 5w50 for heavy track use, but I don't really want to run that on the street so I've settled with 0w40. If I get to a point where this is a heavy use track car, I would go with the full 5w50.

For casual track days, a good 5w30 should be more than enough.

On the conventional end of the scale, as I understand it no API certified oil is actually fully conventional. In order to pass minimum requirements requires at least a little synthetic. So technically, all conventional oils are at least semi-synthetic.

On the synthetic side, I think everyone can agree that group 4 (PAO) and 5 (esters, PAG, et. al.) are synthetic. Mobil1 made a name for themselves by inventing, manufacturing, and selling PAO lube oils. However, modern Mobil1 motor oils branded as synthetic have anywhere from very little to some PAO. PAO is expensive, simple as that, up to double the cost to produce vs Group 3, so it benefits them to reduce the concentration.

Groups 1 and 2 are clearly convention, most can agree.

Group 3 muddies the water. It was established that Group 3 comes from the ground and is processed. The lubricant producers argue that it can carry the synthetic name because it's been processed so much that it is essentially synthetic or just as good. Further adding confusion is the Shell/Pennzoil GTL base which is technically still group 3, but clearly better than all other group 3 oils and even exceeds the performance of group 4 in some ways. So this, they call group 3+. Most Pennzoil platinum oils and even some portion of Rotella have this group 3+ base oil. If your strict definition is that only group 4 and 5 can be called synthetic, then that takes almost everything from Pennzoil out of the synthetic category.

Further confusing things is the fact that the higher the refinement of the oil, the less soluble it is. This causes 2 problems, 1) it can't dissolve buildup as well and 2) it can't carry much in the way of additives. Blenders can add in a portion of ester (expensive) to add solubility, or they can mix in some Group 2 (cheap). So if your PAO oil has, say, 10% group 2 for solubility, is it now "just" a semi-synthetic?

Another thing to keep an eye on is tricky marketing phrases, like when they say "PAO base" doesn't specifically preclude conventional components. As a consumer, you assume it does but you don't really know. And finally, many of the "boutique" oil blenders don't actually get certifications and use more tricky marketing like "meets the requirements of". The certifications can be hilariously expensive so I get why they don't go after them. They're likely relying on the additive manufacturers (infineum, lubrizol, afton, etc.) to do the heavy lifting in engineering the final blend and advisement over what certifications they *should* be able to obtain. And to be honest, they're pretty good at this so unlikely to be wrong.

I don't like the fact that my Redline 5W50 doesn't actually have any real certifications (not to mention the cost), but it's the only one that makes my VCT work with the upsized HPFP.

I never twist any words. I as explicitly stated, let it drain for several hours I didn't drive it for several hours. I never once said that. If you misinterpreted it then that's fine but that's not what was said or what happened. And starting/driving a short period without oil isn't a big deal. People make it sound like a nuke will go off. The engine will be 110% fine and dandy with no issues at all. It happens very often and doesn't cause many issues, if you go to Valvoline it's almost guaranteed to happen 😂. Don't twist words it's easy to prove you wrong lol. I get it, people misinterpret what others say, happens daily with the laws interpretation in court. I have never nor will never advise people to drive their car without any oil for extended periods of time. I wouldn't own a business if that was the case lol. So settle down there bub. You are taking the side of the guy who literally said he was a troll and only here to troll. 🤡

Bro, nobody is lying or twisting words except you. You literally said all of that stuff then edited your posts when you got called out on it. But you “never twist words”? My ass. Go spew your BS elsewhere, nobody is buying it here.

Nah. I don't stand for liars. If someone wants to twist words that's fine. I'ma make it clear they are twisting words. But again, you are siding with the guy who openly admitted to being a self appointed troll. Everything I've said can be 100% verified as fact. It's not even up for debate. Also again, why lie when it's so easy to verify you are full of shit? and I know this clowns been spam reporting my comments its sad. Dudes just harassing me when I called him out for being full of shit. Oh and again, that's the guy who said if you make 1 small mistake any and all information you give is null and void and should not be taken seriously. Fucking clowns fr fr fr. IDC, I'ma just keep blocking ya as needed. I've already got 2 guys spamming my pms.
