2020 Mustang GT PP1 A10

-Vortech V3 kit stock pulley

-BAP

-ID1050X injectors

-JLT CAI for Vortech

-IMRC lockouts

-full rear BMR suspension

-BMR drag springs

-93 tune

-Borla ATAK catback (stock manifolds)

Okay here she goes… car sat for a year before install, however I did run 2-3 tanks of Sunoco 93 through it before I started install. Did the install using CJ pony parts video and the provided instructions… really had zero issues during installation, everything seemed fairly straightforward.

-I did (stupidly) skip the plugs initially because of no good reason.

Tuner sent me a good safe tune that should have gotten the ball rolling. Car wouldn’t start. Finally get the car running and it won’t idle… finally get it idling great and then once it got to operating temp (170+) it started idle surging horribly. Tuner checked logs and both o2s were showing incredibly lean…

We saw my fuel pressure wasn’t great so I replaced the stock pump with another oem pump.

That’s when I told the tuner I forgot to swap the plugs. After an earful from him I replaced them with the NGK iridium’s that were recommended and gapped to his specifications. Car started and ran beautifully… until it hit operating temp, then horrible readings on o2s and horrible surging. Replaced both upstream o2 sensors with OEM Ford o2’s and I am still getting the same issue with rough idle and surging.

I figure the surging is the car trying to get acceptable readings at the O2s since it’s showing lean. I am also figuring it’s an o2 issue because it runs great below operating temp at idle.

Just kinda stumped and needing to vent about it I guess and ping it off you all. Gonna be running a smoke test this weekend to see if there’s a vacuum leak or even a cracked intake or something. Also gonna check all fuses and connectors again… super frustrating because the car ran flawlessly even after sitting for a year. Any help is appreciated.

Update:

pulled car up to the garage, did a vacuum leak smoke test, no leaks detected. Flashed a Wengerd idle test tune and zero issues now even at operating temp! No idea what was up with previous tune, also not gonna name tuner as I’m not here to bash anyone, he’s my buddy and has done many FI tunes, my cars always just been weird I guess.

Interesting, literally have the same build as you however my kit is not on yet, any issues now with Wengered? He is for sure going to be my tuner and want some assurance that he does well with vortech. Are stock cats good now?

Once my tuner figured out it was a tuning issue and not a car issue resolved the issue on his own. Currently torn which to roll with tune wise. Aside from that, car runs quite well now with no issues.

That fact that he didn't think it was his tune, and couldn't figure it out by the datalog wouldn't inspire confidence, if it was me, but what do I know?

That isn’t wrong, but also at the end of the day, he’s been my tuner and my friend before that. Regardless whether I go with Wengerd or stay with him, he will support that decision and said Wengerd is a great tuner. Also, I talked with Wengerd and if I stay with current tuner I’ll be paying him for his tune since my car would still be sitting in my backyard if it weren’t for him.

stock cats were never the issue. My only issue was the tune. Few suggestions I have for anyone running this kit…

1, Take your time and do each step nice and clean. It will save you time later.
2, stay organized, especially with what you take off and such. Lay out your IC piping and silicone sleeves/clamps ahead of time.
3, use the right tools, Torque wrenches, panel removal tools etc.
4, Talk to Wengerd regarding his preferred spark plugs and gapping ahead of time.
5, SKIP the whole PCV Frankenstein hose… get a UPR catch can or similar and use that, you will need it later anyhow.
6, Before you do the install, fill up on fresh fuel.
7, If your unsure of something come here and ask.
8, Consider doing IRMC lockout while it’s torn apart and you’re there anyways.

Along the lines of "Tuning and Preferred SC kits" is tuning based on the spefific kit you have or do the vortec, Prochargers etc... all tune the same under the "centri blower" category? Or is it kit specific?

I mean tuning requirements will depend on factors such as pulley size and fueling requirements. Any more than that I’d refer the question to @Wengerd Performance and let him guide you. He knows far better than I do how to reach your goals safely.

Thanks. Im good and all taken care of by Wengerd. It was just a general question about power adders and their specifics wether it be centri, roots or pd's. But def understand the differences when it comes to pulley changes and the all important fueling which is primarily the most important factor here. I was basically piggy backing on someones concern and threw in a question on it. Thanks 👊

You could use the same tune across different kits

assuming the MAF is the same, boost level is similar, intercooler exists...
