What is your favorite oil filter wrench?

Since Ford requires 180 degrees of rotation after the oil filter contacts the block, I'd like the ability to tighten the filter as well.


In the past, I have used a band style with a handle, but not with a 3/8" ratchet drive. I've used large Channel Lok pliers and one time, on a friends car, had to use a screwdriver across the filter.

One of my previous cars had a canister filter. It was great to use the correct socket. For my 2019 GT, I'm using NAPA PFL 47502 oil filters.

I have never tightened mine that tight. Always hand tight. Haven't had any issues for 3 years. I also wasn't aware that's what they call for too.. lol seems excessive to me. That motovix wrench looks like a good tool

180 degrees after contacting the block (actually it's the oil/coolant heat exchanger) = you can achieve that with your hands.

Just properly clean the surfaces, put a little of clean oil on the gasket and ensure the old gasket is on the old filter and not on the mating surface.

For loosening, if you have one in tight spaces or it stuck, I've appreciated the attached.

For tightening, I've marked the filter for orientation and hand-tightened. I haven't needed a wrench.

Can anyone confirm that the Motovix works with the Ford Racing filter?

They all work just don't get these. They suck for our filters, our filters are tiny!

I really like these because they are adjustable to all filter sizes and its easy in tight spaces.

Oil filter wrenches are only to be used for removal, not installation of the filter.

I've never used a wrench to tighten an oil filter. I'm a 115 lb. "weakling" and I have never needed a wrench to tighten an oil filter 3/4 or full turn as needed for different oil filters on my different cars as required by the oil filter installation instructions. I only use a wrench to remove them as the rubber gasket sticks after thousands of miles (even if you do lubricate the o-ring during installation).

I use to never lubricate the ring and it would never stick, and for some reason I have been doing it on my coyote and it sticks every time. What a pain
I wonder if it mattered what brand of oil filter you used, although in my experience, I've used filters that had round o-rings and others that had the square cut type rubber sealing rings and both would "stick" in the sense that I could never remove them without a wrench despite having tightened them with my hands only to the specified turn after the gasket contacted the block/baseplate when I installed them. Anyway, using a wrench to remove them isn't an issue because thus far every vehicle I've owned had more than enough room for a wrench to fit the filter.
