I couldn’t agree more. That being said, trying to get consensus on all the aspects (good and bad) related to those wheels or convincing anyone they are all good or all bad, is simply an exercise in futility. And yes I’m still following, can’t help myself…also couldn’t stop myself from interjecting due to my frustration. Carry on!….as I slink back into the shadows…
Underatood. Just like ADMs, you will probably never get a consensus. I used to be the posterchild for forged aluminum wheels. I recall a discussion a while back between the guy who developed the car and a guy who sells wheels here. It was an interesting discussion. My point of view at the time was aluminum for the street and carbon for the track. Obviously, that opinion has now changed due to the ability to repair CF wheels.
And I still haven't seen anyone post saying they have significant miles or lots of tire changes on a set. I was hoping there was someone here who drives their R and wanted to discuss how the wheels hold up with some more typical miles on them.This thread has gone on far longer than I ever imagined it would.
I remember in Ford's original marketing package they said that they have some standard test like that where they run into an obstruction and the wheels have to come away with no damage. After doing the test, the person performing it thought something went wrong and ran it a second time - still with no damage.
I have lots of tire changes. What is your specific question pertaining to that?
That's the question. You have lots of tire changes with no issues. That's exactly what I was hoping for .. well I would love it more to hear someone has 100,000 miles on their CF rims with some track use and a couple tire changes per year over the last 8 years, but probably the people who are going to drive that much bought GTs or non-R GT350s.
The key is finding a guy who is willing to take his time using a touchless tire machine. It's the guys who "crank the job out" that cause problems.
I’d argue that guys like Tom that track their CF wheels pretty extensively are changing tires as frequently as those that would daily drive enough to rack up the kind of miles you’re talking about, if not more.
You can definitely go through a set of Cup 2s in one or two track sessions from what I've heard. I just have never heard anyone personally state on here that they have done that lots of times with a single set of CF GT350R rims.
The Hunter revolution is the good machine but he's right - it's only as good as the employee using it. The risk has little to do with ruining a CF wheels structurally - and almost 100% to do with the finish...which If I had to complain about anything on the CF wheels is that the paint (at least on the black ones) seems soft and easy to scratch. If a tech doesn't take their time, they are still going to mess up the finish.
52,000 miles here, probably a half dozen tire changes in total…no worries on my end. I am a corporate contract pilot so I get calls to fly jets all over the country, end up driving to the jobs more often than not.
