Negligence???
You don’t know what you are talking about. I have a bunch of vehicles, race cars and motorcycles and do all my own work
Parts or systems very rarely suddenly break, you have warning signs and I know what to look for

Ok you are missing the whole point here. If water pump needs replacing and I am pulling the car apart you bet I am replacing common items that could go wrong that are cheap to do.

Warning sign uhh? when you are driving on a road trip at the worst time I have had shit go south. If you maintain it properly you dont have to worry about it.

And yeah I don't know what I am talking about.... I am a Mechanical Engineer and worked as a Mechanic at Ford for some time. LOL

Well, i never been stranded in over 40 years….
Of course i inspect all my vehicles on a regular basis
The don’t know what you’re talking about was in reference to your comment about me being negligent
Well if you were a mechanic you should know how to inspect a rubber hose …. Right?
I had things breaking violently on a race track 😂
Anyhow, enjoy your M1. It’s a great car

Not trying to give you a hard time, maybe I shouldn't have used negligent. You have an amazing list of cars I see what you mean I agree. And Thanks I am loving it. Cheers

March of 22….Ford dealer told my dad his 16 Explorer needed a new water pump. He is 83. I got involved and contacted Ford and talked to them about the premature water pump failure. They agreed and covered 70% of the repair as a courtesy. Your water pump has a 1) Experienced premature failure or 2) the victim of an over zealous service writer trying to make $150k writing bs tickets…..Probaby #2.

The water pump design on the 16 explorer is stupid ….. it’s inside the engine ….cheap part. Expensive labor…

Hey guys. So I have noticed ticking at startup and whining upon acceleration for a few months. I don’t daily drive the car and it seemed to be fine after getting warmed up. I’m no mechanic but it sounded like a belt issue by ear. Today I decided to bring it up to Ford for an oil change and have them inspect it. My S550 was one of the first orders when the order banks opened in 2014 so it’s way out of warranty. The dealer just called me and said the water pump and various belts and pullies associated with it had to be replaced. I was told it would cost $1,200. This is the first issue I’ve had with this car and while it is 8 years old it only has 35,000 miles on it. How common is this on these cars and is that estimate super high or about normal considering it’s at a dealership? Thanks guys.

Oh, and by the way, to add the cherry on top I was told my Ford Performance by Borla cat-back exhaust was cracked on the x-pipe. How is that even possible? I’ve never driven over anything. I’ve noticed the exhaust sounded like crap recently and it stinks when I open my driver door but I was figuring it just needed to be tightened somewhere. Didn’t expect Borla stainless steel to crack. So I guess I will have to call Borla and try to get it replaced under warranty. What a day!
I had my water pump replaced at 55k miles. It is a known weak spot unfortunately. The water pump is one of those things on the V8, V6 and Ecoboost that either you get bad luck with it (like you and I) or you go tons of miles/years without anything happening. Replace it once and you will be all set. Sad to hear you had this issue out of warranty but this is once it is fixed you probably will never have an issue with it again.

Yes, the water pump in my '15 went out around 30k miles. It sounded like a loud drone when it failed. Was replaced under warranty

Parts failure can be caused by several things. Some that come to mind are improper design, weak design, low quality materials, and improper installation. No doubt we could go on with more reasons for premature failure. I am no engineer, but it seems to me that having a plastic? impeller that is subjected to cyclic thermal and torsional (or perhaps more properly torque) loading may be some of the cause for some failures?

As far as replacing parts and coolant to each his own. If your main concern is COO then it makes sense to run it to failure. If reliability is of primary concern, then while one is replacing a worn serpentine belt or noisy pump it makes sense to do the t-stat, hoses, etc. Whatever makes your heart go pitter patter. Coolant does degrade over time. The coolant I use in all of my vehicles I test annually with the test kit designed for it. My oldest vehicle is my truck, and the coolant has been in it for probably 10 years and will get tested again this spring. If it is good, I will run it another year and so on. The coolant is what protects the cooling system from corrosion. When it is no longer able to do that the system will begin to fail.

My belief is that all of the fluids are cheap in comparison to the parts that they protect. Testing and/or changing them is the least expensive way to maintain my vehicle(s) because the cost of replacement parts and the time spent installing them or the money spent to have them installed will be far greater.

Anyway, just my $0.02. You do you and I support you as long as one is not cheaping out on safety.

My water pump bearing went out at 70k. I replaced the water pump myself and it was very easy.
