Dreaded Water Pump Failure?

If someone were to run their engine with no coolant in the overflow does not at all guarantee a ruined engine. The amount of liquid in the overflow compared to what is in the engine is like spitting in the ocean. Besides, a light will come on the dash indicating a hot engine long before any damage is done.

Well, I apologize for asking a question as my first post. I thought this forum was my best bet for getting advice. The car was on because I had just started it up in the morning to head to work. Noticed a strange sound, popped the hood and recorded. Car hasn’t been on since.

Early S550 water pumps had a composite impeller which was prone to failure. Replacement S550 water pumps can be found with a metal impeller.

This was a similar issue back with the 1992-1999 E36 3-Series BMW’s…. Composite impellers didn’t last, replacements were metal.

I feel like I replaced millions of those E36 water pumps for that exact reason.
