I don't know about every flasher device but SCT and HP tuners do re write the entire tune each flash. Even if you choose the calibration only choice. It still re writes the engine and trans calibration. Even if no changes are made.
But since he is having issues - its best to rule out the software and make sure it is retrained properly - it is possible (though unlikely) it was not done right from the factory

If the issues keep happening - then Ford will need to look into it further. wynand32's issue seem to be similar to what I experienced earlier this year

So he tells Ford it is harsh shifting, the first step is for Ford to re-flash the tranny. This is under warranty in his case so only cost is his time.

If it fixes it, wonderful, if not take it back and let Ford do whatever is next in the diagnostic chain.

OP make sure you tell them it is intermittent and you want the flash even if they cannot duplicate the issue.

You could also ask about a re-learn but I think you will get a deer in the headlights look from the service writer.

At this point, I'm inclined to make sure the fluid level is fine and then see how it acts once I start driving "normally" outside of the break-in. Then if it's still doing it after enough miles I'll have it looked it.

It's not so bad that I think there's something actually broken, but it's enough to bug me.

Harsh downshifts is an issue with this trans. The engineers need to get it figured out.

I do believe it is software since Chevy has the exact same 10 speed and it shifts smoothly. Only difference is the software.

Wonder if comparing to gms tune would shed some light on it? Free on the other forums.

Which gm veh uses it? Camaro?

Even though this linked thread below has grown into one of the largest 10R80 threads on this site, it contains A LOT of excellent tech supplied by many M6G members.

Hit Post 1, Page 1 - scroll down and there’s many hyperlinks to demo how to reset the 10R80’s adaptive learning with Forscan and even the actual Ford instructions is included in another link there.

Also to note, many 10R80’s were found by their owners to be low on fluid right from the factory… Again, Post 1, Page 1, scroll down and see the hyperlinks to knowing how to check the trans fluid.

I'm wondering if that might not pep up the transmission as it relearns from generally more aggressive driving.
The adaptation is not from the driver. Way too many people think this. It adapts/learns shift strategy transitions, premeditated shift points etc.

It can take a few hours, or a few days. Generally the overall smoothness of shifting/downshifting on its own will be noticeable.

By no means will you ever make your car slower by driving slower too much.
