I just purchased a pair of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires for my fronts 265/40/19.
They are from a place called Canada Wheels in Canada. I bought them online because finding these MPSS are really hard to to do right now up here. Here's the thing they are Date stamped 4216.
I'm not impressed, and I'd like to get opinions on this.
Should I ask for a refund?
Will they be okay?
Should brand new tires be at least within a year of production?
Thx in advance.

per Tire Rack:

tires have a useful life in service of between six to ten years. And while part of that time is spent as the tire travels from the manufacturing plant to the manufacturer's distribution center, to the retailer and to you, the remainder is the time it spends on your vehicle.

5 year old 'new' tires. Best case scenario is you have 5 years left on them. Worst case a year. EMAIL Michelin.

They should be labeled as aged tires and sold at like less than half their original price. I think I would return them depending on what you paid for them.

Unless you’re desperate I’d return them. The experience will almost certainly be sub optimal.

Most people would never notice, and I bet the people at the tire dealer dont even know about tire shelf life except one person that “might have heard of it once”. You will probably be their first experience with this issue and will likely get some push back on it. Maybe even some BS fired your way saying it’s ok and not to worry about it.

I wouldn’t want them either. Good luck.

Right so if I don't drive that much.
Last year put 15,000 Kilometers on my car these tires wouldn't be safe Between 6 to 10 years? So could be 6 in which I'd be screwed.
I just don't want to take a chance.
Will be phoning today for a return label.
Thx.

Have some backup and EMAIL Michelin & see what they say, if they agree they're to old, there's some ammunition for ya.

See what Michelin has to say. I think sitting in a warehouse is a lot different than sitting on a car being exposed to the suns UV rays for years. Maybe you can get deep discount and keep the tires.

People who own RV's that only get used a few times a year often have a tire cover that is placed over the tires any time it's parked. Those tires protected that way can be decades old and still safe to use.

I really want up to date tires. Taking a discount won't make me feel any better. I mean you're right about probably being safe jut it would always be in the back of my mind.

Safe? Probably. Everything they are designed and built to be? Nope. Hold out for the full experience premium tires provide.

I got a return label and full refund with no bitching on the distributors
(Canada Wheels) behalf. Said they were sorry and have no control over what tires are sent out from their various wharehouses.
I didn't question their policies because I will not be using their company in the future.
On a side note:
Received my 305/35/19 MPSS today
from Black Circles Wheel and Tire
(Canada) DOT Date Stamp '4021'.
Now these Tires I can trust.
Lol
Guess I should have gone with them in the first place but was a bit more expensive.
You get what you pay for right.
Ordered my fronts today from Black Circles.
When I emailed Michelin corporate they said they have a limit of 36 months shelf DOT Stamp. I contacted two big Tire companies, they said they try to keep Tire inventory to 18 months DOT Stamp.
Can't wait to get them mounted on these puppies. Carrol Shelby CS-5
Thx for the replies.

Most good retailers return tires before they get that old, and then a discount place buys them. and sells them.
Without testing the tread with the correct tools, you don't know if they be any different than just molded tires.
When you see sales , buy 3 get one free, sales they are try'n to move stock.
The issue with these dated required regulations, is down the road you won't be able to get tires as no one will stock tires hoping to sell them, So the volume movers will stay around longer, but the tire sizes used on the limited run models will not.
Worse is the fact that the oem's can't get together and pick a wheel size diameter and go with it.
This 18/19/20/21/22. Will come back to haunt everyone that keeps vehicles longer than the genral public.
Tire producers are not going to store molds for sizes that don't sell in volume. and with the oems outfitting performance cars that tend to out live other general vehicles, this will be an issue.
If they all got together and picked a wheel diameter, whatever it is say 20" it be better in the long run.
