Noticing that when the car is idling in neutral with my hand on the shift knob, you can both hear and feel a faint metal on metal knocking and it's creeping me out. Anyone else experiencing this? No trouble shifting, what a joy this transmission is otherwise.

My car doesn’t have that. How many miles have you put on the car so far? If only a couple I would run it up to 500 miles or so and if it’s still there have the dealer check it out. Do you have a good service dept near you that you can trust?

I've seen this in a number of transmissions, you should never rest your hand on the shifter in a stick. That should be the fork contacting the synchro.

I don't have this issue, but one thing mine does that I noticed is in 2nd gear only, it makes a weird sound going into gear and when on throttle. Almost like the sound of a can of rocks. It goes into gear just fine, but the noise has me slightly concerned for sure. The car is put away for the season already but next year I am going to try a fluid change and see what I find.

The only thing I have noticed on my Tremec is that if the tranny is cold, it doesn't necessarily like going to into R on the first attempt. For the other gears it certainly seems to be a 'chunky, tactile'' sounding shift for sure... Is that what people refer to as 'notchy'?

Has anyone found the configurable electronic gauge for Transmission Temp? It says that it exists in the owners manual but it does not seem to be in the menu option?

All I know is that I LOVE THIS CAR and I LOVE DRIVING THIS CAR...! Screw all of the naysayers...

I would say your description fits what I perceive as notchy on my tremec. I also get the occasional difficulty going into reverse but I haven’t noticed it being temp related. Seems to happen randomly. I just have to shift it back into another gear then try reverse again and it works. I’ve read gt350 cases of this and it seems like it’s not that uncommon. I assume it’s something to do with the reverse lock out. When mgw releases their shifter I’ll probably swap to that and see if it goes away

No, you shouldn't apply pressure to it in any direction unless intending to shift and shouldn't press down on it. I've been driving stick for 20+yrs and rest my hand on the shifter for all of them. Many weighted shiftknobs (not including collar weight) weigh about as much as a hand does. (13oz vs 16oz)

I've never seen a shift knob that weighs a couple pounds, because that is how much force you are putting onto it if you rest your hand on it. plus, when you rest your hand on it, you are not pressing straight down, due to the movement of your elbow, you tend to pull back a bit as well.

It's definitely not good to rest your hand on the shift knob. I haven't had a Tremec 3160 apart, but typically there are little plastic bushings on the shift forks. Any weight on the shift knob will wear those prematurely. They aren't intended to absorb constant pressure like that.

I've never experienced a knocking noise like this. I think something is wrong with the transmission and I would bring it into the dealer as soon as possible. I'm sure it has nothing to do with resting your hand on the shifter, but I wouldn't mention that to the dealer.

edit: sorry hand-rester person is not the OP. My bad.

You're NOT applying a couple lbs by resting your hand on your shifter unless you have hands the size of Andre the Giant.

Resting your hand on a knob is applying 5-7oz of weight. unless you are trying to apply pressure to it. You can easily pull out a kitchen scale to find out.

nt the most accurate weight measurement for sure, but I’ve confirmed it to 2.5 and 5lb weights.

and I’m a small guy.

btw, I trust engineer over your shitty auto rag.

engineers: me (auto specialists at that, but transmissions are not my specialty)

but, you can check on that engineer guys auto podcast, brings it up often enough.

highly accurate kitchen scale came out to 0.4-0.5kg or about 1lb. That's with my elbow on the counter, seated and hand just resting on the scale. When my hand is 'resting' on the shifter it's never limp, my arm is supporting it's weight and I'm just lightly keeping ahold of the ball.

Same, peaked about 11oz on my kitchen scale in similar position.

the "shitty rag" literally quotes and links to an engineers video. I literally linked it in case you were to lazy to read till it and you were STILL to lazy. Impressive.

Also yeaah, not accurate scale at all. I'm a fat ass with small hands and im under 1lb on a kitchen scale.

But people who have manuals are more jacked than people with automatics, it is just a fact. So a manual Mach 1 driver is just in better shape, with larger, more meaty hands, unlike the girly hands of an automatic driver. It's a fact and you can quote me on that. Btw, what was the original post about again?

shogun is talking about a limp hand and holding the ball. You’re talking about meaty hands and girly hands. What is this thread about I have long forgotten. I had to double check I didn’t stumble into the Mustang6g personals section for a second:cwl:
