The cost to develop and build cars and therefore the prices just keep skyrocketing
actually that's not that big of a factor. The prices are skyrocketing because the money to the consumer is "cheap". Consumers are buying payments, not final prices. Just listen to your local sales guy. He's pushing payments as the metric of affordability.

the average (?) consumer (@martinjlm I'm sure has the data) can afford only ~500/mo payment. When the loans are written for 60, 72, even 84 months and banks are very willing to roll negative equity onto the new loan (previously unheard of) there is no longer any downward price pressure. If 36mo terms at 500/mo the car has to cost less than 20K. But that can now balloon out to 36k and more. Go back 15 years and new car prices were solidly affordable. Go back further and people were paying for cars out of cash savings.

Once the easy finance took off manufacturers kept hiking the price to match the longer/looser standards.

Musk can only keep congratulating his competitors for so long without showing some sweat.
he has is trusty bong at his side and seemingly endless Wall St money and generous gov't indulgences to sell. IF Ford can actually produce a vehicle with *good* quality, Tesla is toast even if the Ford doesn't have the 0-60 or max range.

Reading back through recent comments from Ford leadership and also supposed insiders I can see now what has happened. They've bought into the notion that people aren't going to drive anymore and possibly not even own their own cars. So it's vastly more important to them to stake their claim on a spot in this transportation appliance market than it is to worry over the antiquated concept of a "driver's car".

You only have to look at the interior to see that this is no enthusiast's car. Not even an enthusiastic soccer mom's car. These people are selling a consumer gadget and they want "Mustang" to be their "i" in iPhone. To them, "Mustang" is now just a marketing adjective that is supposed to evoke excitement even though the consumer has no idea why. Just read their marketing pap. It's more like something out of a millennial romance novel than sports car brochure.

They will sell every one they make.

Don't like it... don't buy one.

Here, on a MUSTANG board, the poll results show that a majority of the voters don't care either way. Guess what... the general public cares even less.

Ford exists to sell cars to the masses, not appease a tiny demographic of angry Mustang coupe owners.

From the Truth About Cars

So just stop it, okay? If you don’t like the EcoStangMachBoostE, then don’t buy one. Better yet, stop talking about it. If you’re really angry about something on the internet, the worst possible way to protest it is to click it, share it, and comment on it. But Ford was counting on you doing exactly that, and y’all fell for it. The only fool that you’re fooling is the fool that is you.

I've never seen a worse product unveiling and reception. In my life. I'm 42. It's F'in sad.

If it had a Rotten Tomato score, it would be like 10%.

Hilarious EPIC fail. I think it'll be a hard sell. We'll see. $50K + for an assed out abortion?
No thanks.

If everyone had your attitude in the 80's you wouldn't even have the Mustang you have now. You'd have the front drive Probe Mustang. By people speaking up they changed the name and left the Mustang alone. Nothing wrong with people expressing their democratic rights and voicing their concern/opinions.

Yeah yeah I've heard it all, your analogy is stupid. The Mustang car is not on the chopping block here. No amount of angry men yelling would have stopped Ford from putting a horse on this electric SUV. Get over it, you're not some special person that saved the Mustang and neither are anyone else. I've cut my teeth on the Mustang since the mid 90s, I love the car... and even I can think for myself enough to know that it doesn't matter at all.

Poll at the top of this thread. 52% answer "no change" when asked if this would make them more or less likely to buy a Mustang coupe. And the people that answered "less likely" are straight up brain dead.

Not gonna lie, this last weekend I met a girl from my home town that I apparently went to school with. And somehow we got onto the subject of dating and was upset that I didn't have a girlfriend. She asked what my type was and I described it. She thought I was being picky but I kinda left it open ended and said look, I'm not looking for a damn Instamodel but a decent looking girl who's going some working matter in between her ears. Here's the thing about 10's. If you wanna buy a Ferrari, you're going to have to maintain a Ferrari. She didn't get it. She was kinda closer to a V6 Camaro anyway. She's okay but just...whatever.
