I went into my HP Tuners and turned the gear display on in drive and sport. They always show
With non digital dash? interesting. I may have my tuner turn this on

Yes. I have a base model GT. Not sure how SCT or Forscan work, but HP Tuners is easy. You can turn it on with the trans in sport or drive to always show.

Launching in 2ng gear is hugely advantageous to a boosted or high hp application. IT won't hit the tires as hard and will allow the car to be farther down the track before shifting which can allow better 60fts and 99% of the time, better traction. Mainly because the 1st gear in the 10r80 is so steep and the rpm drop on the shift is a lot larger than 2 - 7
Very interesting. Have you done this with success? what HP to the wheels does this start becoming an advantage?

Currently, my programming doesnt allow 2nd gear transbrake or automatic shifting from 2nd gear in sport mode, I would have to launch in 2nd off the footbrake and either paddle shift or immediately try to throw it back in drive after I launch.
The next tune I put in the car will have the ability to launch in 2nd gear with the transbrake and auto shift.
As far as hp, I guess it really depends on the car. My car has zero weight transfer because of the road race suspension and I know my car could benefit from it. Mine makes 800rwhp, but I want to put the smaller pulley on for 5lb more boost

Anyone here have experience with 2nd gear launch tunes? Think it would be hard on the transmission or torque converter to do this often?

I whippled my car, ~770 rwhp and first gear seems pretty useless at least on the street, 2nd gear launch still breaks the drag radials loose easily. Not sure if this is hard on the transmission or torque converter though. Ive been getting some transmission fluid leaked on the garage floor and I cant really tell where its coming from. Transmission doesnt read hot or anything and it seems to function 100%.

Trans fluid leaked on the garage floor can't be a good thing.

My current tune is 2nd gear leave, haven't been back to the track since, waiting on the car...

It's as hard on it as it would be on a C6 launching in first

How so?
Personally, I don't know. But a shop warned me against 2nd gear launches for this reason

That shop does not understand how an auto trans works. The only possible downside would be slightly more heat in the converter.

The 2.40 first gear ratio of the C6 is damn close to the 2.34 second gear ratio of the 6R80. As long as the clutch pack is applied it dosen't care what gear it is.

I had a torque converter failure, not sure if its due to occasionally launching in 2nd gear, but this is the 2nd transmission problem I've had after doing some 2nd gear launches so its a bit concerning, not entirely sure if the failures were related to the 2nd gear launches or not though.

anyone have any high hp long term 2nd gear launch tune without problems with the stock converter?

In our case on our 2018 GT which was posted above the car was calibrated by Lund Racing to be able to launch in 2nd gear. This helped us quite a bit due to the power level and gearing of the car to get it down the track quicker and not have the car shift into another gear at the top end. This allows the car to stay in the gear at the top end and rev out properly instead of losing momentum from a shift into a higher gear. It also prevents tire spin at such a high hp levels in a very aggressive low gear.

Hope that helps.

Aftermarket torque converter? Any trans issues?

Circle D converter, Mcleod steel and friction kit upgrade as well which was installed by Jake@Power By the Hour. Never had an issue with the trans. I cut consistent 1.27 60fts with that car and it was on the stock magneride shocks and struts.

The car is still running over in the middle east. Here's a pic of it from a few days ago.
