Anyone Solve Spare Tire Issue for PP GT's

Are there other “scrap yard” alternatives (other than a full size rim/tire) to use? The AA alternative mentioned in this thread is nice, but for almost $500, not so nice....

Like I said before, a late model Ford Taurus/Explorer spare fits perfectly on the rear and closely matches the variety of 27"-27 3/4" tires used on the rear. It fits snugly in the spare tire well. It clears the rear brakes easily and I think it will clear the front 6-piston Brembos with a spacer.

When I first bought my Mustang I ended up buying a 19x8 wheel on closeout from Tirerack that cleared the front brembos. Figured I would just buy a tire for it and keep it in the trunk. After receiving the wheel and placing just it in the trunk, it pretty much took up a lot of room in the trunk without a tire. Would be fine for around town, but no room for luggage if I went out of town. I returned the wheel and then ended up finding the Automotive Authority spare.

When I had my Challenger I got a puncture where the item didn't stay in the tire and had to stop every 10 minutes on the way home to pump it up. It was a PITA! A plug would have been a perfect fix, so I added a plug kit and some tools and moved them to my Mustang when I got it.

Love the AA kit, but don't like the price. I found a PP front wheel and tire on ebay for around $160 delivered. I figure with a jack and lug wrench it's $200 minimum, for something that won't go in the spare well and will have to deal with all of it rattling around in the trunk. I'm going to buy the AA kit and like everybody else hope I wasted my money and never see it again after it's in the well.

If you own the tire already, why isn't it "know" instead of "think"? Seriously, if not, for a flat in the front, you'll need to play the "jack the rear / put the spare on / jack the front / put the rear on the front" game. Hey, twice the fun, especially if it's raining or at night.

Past that, what does "closely matches the variety of 27"-27 3/4" tires used on the rear" mean? Looking on ebay, the biggest compact spare I can find for an Explorer is a 165/70-18 (27.1" diameter). That's 2.2% smaller than the rear tire diameter (27.7") of the 275/40-19 tires on a PP1 car. The Taurus one was even worse, with over a 4% difference. Might be close enough to limp a mile or so to the gas station, but I don't think there's any way I'd risk the LSD by putting any serious distance with that large a spread.

I don’t think the question is about clearing the rear brakes at all.

The concern with the PP S550’s is and always has been clearing the front brake calipers.

I do have a question for those who don’t have the AA aftermarket spare but do have the Ford (or insert other spare option here):

If the spare you have won’t clear the front brakes and the previous statements made are to move the stock rear wheel to the front (for square setups) and just put the spare on the rear to get the vehicle home or to a shop.....

How the heck are you SAFELY moving (2) wheels simultaneously on the side of the road with a single scissors jack????? A freaking scissors jack cannot be used to jack the pinch weld at the center of the vehicle or safely support the weight.... Performing a jack and swap twice to just change 1 flat???

Just buy a regular spare tire kit. If you get a front tire flat, just install one of your rear tires up front and use the spare on the back........ pain in the Ass, but still works.

In the event of a flat, you're going to have a noticeably undersized tire on your rear axle. If you're not near home or it's a time when you can't get the normal tire fixed, driving any kind of distance in that configuration isn't going to do your differential any favors. If it's the ~25" spare mentioned above, the 11% diameter difference is going to be a real issue.

For trips I carry a plug kit (Safety Seal), sometimes it can be quicker to plug the tire on the car than to change the tire. I plan to get the AA spare and like others, hope I never see it again after putting it in the trunk well. However... these spares sometimes lose air pressure so it is worth checking it occasionally.

I carry jack stands, wheel chocks, and a low-profile jack in the trunk of all my vehicles. In addition to the jumper cables, starter box, tire inflator, patch kit, gloves, mini toolkit, battery led worklamps, etc....

Yes, it does. Where the 2.2% size difference to the PP1 rear tires sits in the LSD's ability to accommodate different sizes is anyone's guess.

I've done spare tire change on the left side of the car at the freeway twice.

You do not want to spend extra second in that situation and you are lucky if you have a watcher who'd warn you when cars pass too close to you.

Here and there you hear stories of people killed at the side of the road.

So I'll pay extra for a spare that fits everywhere.

So a 165/70/18 would be a 27.1" diameter, which is pretty close to a regular GT size and would work for me. But does it clear the front brakes of a regular GT w/o a spacer?

I was curious about the possibility of damaging the Torsen diff on the PP cars by using a spare that's a different diameter. I've read that you can on several forums. Did a little searching and found this thread from our very own that I think will be of interest to guys going back and forth over which solution to go with. Apparently, even a 25% difference in diameter over the short term will not ruin the diff and this according to the manufacturer themselves. Puts my mind at ease even though I went with the AA solution...
