I agree, if you want to run 87 in these cars and save some money nothing wrong with that. I can feel some difference in the lower end and driving around NYC that's important to me. I also dont drive anywhere near 15k miles a yearMost people can absorb $270/year, but the question for most is...is it worth it? I can't fault anyone that says yes...but most people would flip their shit if their insurance went up $270/year...or if their phone bill went up $270/year.
It's all in the value of what the $270 gives you. For me, it's closer to $500. ;)...and it's a no-brainier.
Again, I don't have any data for the MY18....but the link I posted shows the dyno for the MY17, and the difference is so insignificant that it can't be felt but only measured.
I've said it before...using Top Tier fuel is far more important for these cars than running premium.
I have no issue with 87... not wanting to be part of that debate....but if you dig deep enough you will often find a tiny * by the HP figures (not just Ford but GM does the same thing) *93. They do run 93 (standard prem in Detroit) when they rate HP. Doesn't mean you have to run it, it is just when pushing the engine for max hp/performance you need 93.So the mileage advertisements and the hp/tq ratings are based on 87 octane.
scottmoyer, no, optimum power and efficiency is obtained with 91+, which the GT at least was designed for. It can get buy on 87. Seriously though, if you can't afford premium buy a yaris.
I used to work for the largest petrochemical company for fuel additives in the USA. Now I work in the automotive industry, specifically on fuel systems.I think a fellow Mustang6g member actually works with a gas and additive mixture company/refinery. Care to input @bootlegger ?
My thoughts are, it's important to run a Top Tier fuel like Shell or Costco. Link to different stations that sell Top Tier fuel.
Coming from the EBM and now driving a GT, the timing advance is a pretty big jump in the EBM. The timing advance difference between 87 and 93 in the GT isn't nearly as much. Makes me believe the engine efficiency is fairly close between 87 and 93 in the GT. Just my thoughts, I don't claim to be an expert lol.
The 2018 manual specifies premium for optimal performance. As explained above, even the 2015-2017 HP numbers were run on premium.I've been reading these forums for awhile now and keep seeing people argue about owning a Mustang and whining about paying for premium gas. I can't find anything in the owners manual that states 91+ is recommended. The owners manual states the car was designed to run on 87.
Now, if you put a tune on the car, the tune may require 91 or 93, but from the factory, the car requires 87. So the mileage advertisements and the hp/tq ratings are based on 87 octane.
Exactly! Now you're catching on! ;)Oh no, I think I've created a thread that won't die. I was only curious about the hard numbers on actual differences.
So far we have figured, roughly 2% MPG increase at 93 Octanne, perhaps 10HP, 20% cost increase and determined Top Tier Fuel brand fuel is primarily the important part for engine health.
We have also determined running 87 octane in a GT results is Prius like performance and fuel economy but will fry the pistons in the process.
Maximum performance? OH NO. My 440whp car is now only making 435whp on the highway, i'm screwed. Just going to cruise with the prius I guess. The 2018 manual specifies premium for optimal performance. As explained above, even the 2015-2017 HP numbers were run on premium.
IMO, if you daily drive the Mustang and don't need max performance, run 87 (top tier). If you can't find top tier, stick with higher octane in the hopes that the company you are using increases additive levels in their premium.
Why the smart ass response?Maximum performance? OH NO. My 440whp car is now only making 435whp on the highway, i'm screwed. Just going to cruise with the prius I guess.
