One thing I would have liked to have seen on the R is a light weight flywheel, like how Porsche differentiated the 997.1 GT3 vs the GT3RS. Love the voodoo, but this thing does not blip well from down low on the tach.

Trust me, and sorry to any delusional R owners, your engine assembly is exactly the same as the lowly, regular GT350's out there.
"Even the lowest of the lowest", asked the Tech owner in a Dickensonian, street urchin kinda way.

Ford giveth and taketh it away...

Thanks for the article and link Epiphany!

Honestly I wish they had made a few minor changes too to further differentiate them, ala the GT3 / GT3RS:

- Carbon ceramic brakes (carbon wheels + carbon brakes = unholy god of light weight)
- Carbon fiber driveshaft
- Lightweight flywheel
- MOARRR POWERRRRRR
- Factory roll cage like the GT3
- Higher redline (8500rpm perhaps)

And I wouldn't expect to get all of those, but hell even if 1 or 2 of them were standard (flywheel and redline for example), I would have happily paid extra to get some of the others as standalone options that were unique to the R.

Of course it would be more expensive again, but it woulda been cool as hell :)

Yep. The R's are complete shit. That engine is junk and exactly the same pos that is put in the junker regular GT350.

Actually, there is a secret engine line where the motor's labeled "R" are pulled aside into a spray room and sprayed with a liberal amount of Pixie Dust. Non-R's don't get this Pixie dust, and it shows.

You can even tell when in reverse.

Well the fronts originally were carbon ceramic but the cost was astronomical and was deemed entirely too far out of price point. And forget the power thing. The weights, man, the weightz! Roof? Carbon composite. Decklid? Carbon composite. Doors? Aluminum. Actually I think those three panels should have been carbon composite from the start for both base and R cars. I would have no doubt that would have put the R at 3590 lbs and the Track Pack at 3720. That's 20lbs less than a Camaro SS 1LE for the Track Pack and knocking on the door of Corvette Z06's for the R!

This was actually disputed somewhere? Epiphany said, "delusional R owner(s)"..which would suggest there's more than that one guy who thought this? I say troll.

I like to disassemble things.
Hey, even some at Ford Racing inhaled some of the aforementioned pixie dust.

They are out there. Thankfully they are easy to spot. They can usually be seen at various car gatherings, hood up, with a plastic snake or stuffed animal sitting atop their unique and extremely rare 5.2L engine.

Not directly engine related, but always wondered why the restrictor plate in back of the grill was different on the Rs vs non-Rs. Its such a small difference, that it seems trivial, but must have been done for a reason (thinking aero?).

Most likely Aero; another thought is an R, in spirit, isn't supposed to have a condenser. But that would mean the R w/Elec. should have the Non-R restrictor plate, which I don't believe is the case.

If there's an argument to be had, it would be power to weight. Well, and ADM...
