AR15.com is the mall, and AR15s are literally the ricers of the firearm world. A forum focused around that is like a stance-nation meet. Everyone's talking about the coolest new trends in accessorizing their fantasy 'zombie killing/SHTF rifle' and whether or not to cerakote FDE because we used to be fighting in desert or OD because we might be fighting Russia soon, because ya know - gotta look operator as fuck....in the surburbs..
My Operator As Fuck BCM AR15, a pic I took to put on ar15.com;

I've considered painting it FDE, because Operator As Fuck.

And zombies............can't forget about those zombies. Russian zombies are....like.....the worst.

Maybe that explains ads like below. I thought camo was to keep from being noticed.

It would be nice if they actually showed pictures of the guns in the ad rather than just list everything off in text.

I suppose this will be off topic, so I apologize, but I figure it's better than starting a new thread. I am new to guns, and have only been shooting a couple times so far. I have a lot to learn, and if anyone can recommend some good resources online to do so, I would appreciate it (forums, safety and advice websites, info on calibers, advice on safes, etc.). My favorite gun that I've shot so far was an AR-15 style rifle, and I've been thinking about picking one up just to take to the range and practice, but I have small kids and I'm VERY paranoid about having guns in the house... I also don't want people to think I'm "tacticool" when I shoot it at the range!

Sorry for the off topic post, and thanks for any help!
I also have a young son. However, what has worked well for us is NOT making guns taboo. That's a good way to produce tragedy. As a kid I almost killed myself multiple times because I was playing around with my dad's pistol. Normalize them and don't freak out about them. Above all, the rule is, mommy and daddy will teach you but if you are alone in a room with a gun you do not ever touch it unless we are in the same room (aka working on educating the kid). Most of mine are secured in a vault. But for home defense guns, IMO education is a lot safer than hiding and ignorantly assuming the kid won't find them and get curious.

He also knows the basics of pointing in a safe direction, not touching the trigger until ready to fire, etc. (we used a toy SBS for that training). Hopefully over the winter he'll be ready for a range trip.

I don't see how it's poor opsec...if someone thinks or knows you're packing, you're less likely to get messed with.
Gotta disagree here. Both courthouses I worked in, LEO's who were armed had to wear a small fluorescent yellow tag clipped to their shirt. I asked why and one of the DA's said "oh those are shoot me first tags" joking around.

While sometimes the presentation of a weapon is enough to deter an attack (and you still need to be prepared to pull the trigger in case it doesn't), the bad guy typically gets to make the first move and you have to respond to it. Taking away the advantage of concealment just gives them another advantage. If I'm a BG and I know you're carrying because I can see the gun/bulge and I need my drugs, etc....I might just nail you first before going for the cashier/teller/other victim. That way I get another gun AND whatever I originally wanted. Similar would apply to a mass shooter and even more so to one fueled by radicalism (who do not kill themselves at the first sign of resistance like a sick kid might).

Only place I open carry is at home or on my property.

YMMV

That's exactly how my brothers and I were raised from a young age. My father was a Marine, avid shooter, and hunter so guns were always around (almost always locked up in a safe). My brothers and I were taught to respect firearms, never ever touch them by ourselves, and the basic safety rules (finger off trigger, always point in a safe direction etc). As we grew older (maybe 8 and up?) we each had our own pellet rifles & airsoft guns (dad kept the ammo so we didn't have full access to it), and would go shoot the .22 with our dad often. This eventually led to home defense guns being left accessible just in case we needed them while home alone and we never had an issue. Fast forward to today and my two brothers and I each have our carry licenses as well as several firearms and plan on teaching our children the same values. I 100% agree with EMT, educating your kids at a young age to have a healthy respect for firearms is the way to go.
