I thought some of you younger guys (I am 68) would like to hear how a modern muscle car compares to the old ones. I have a 2015 Mustang Premium Ecoboost Auto PP. A friend of mine came over for fathers day with his beautiful 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 original 427 4 speed convert. Absolutly beautiful, red with red leather interior. Two four barrels and 4.11 gears. He said one of only 5 left in the country. This is an over $100,000 car. Now, we went for a ride and put 10 gallons of Cam II at 7.99 a gallon in. Power wise, I think my Mustang feels stronger, at least to 70. It is one heavy car! I am guessing it would run in the mid 14's to low 14's. Gas mileage about 12 MPG. Drum breaks all around,OUCH! handling no comparison, 50 years technology makes a heck of a difference! We were riding with the top down and that was fantastic. No blind spots here! Interior was beautiful, real leather, and no air conditioning. He was having a little trouble shifting the 4 speed, long throws too! I can see why the young guys want the new cars! I would not want to take that car on a trip, parade would be fine. It was a fantastic looking back on my high school years experience, I would love to own it, but the Mustang is light years the better car! Dang i would like to own that car! It is BEAUTIFUL!

I don't think the early 60's FE motors were generally all that powerful. Comparing it to one like a 428 cobra jet or a 427 sohc motor would probably yield a different result. None of this changes what you're saying, though. Your point still stands-the progress has been incredible.

Garden variety FEs, agreed. R-code 427s, which is what should be in that '63 if it's a gennie, are no slouch. Especially when fine-tuned.

Things have definitely come a long way though, when I drive one of my old cars and my '15 back to back it's eye-opening.

Thanks for the replies! The car is an original 427 425 HP 4 speed Convertible. Only changes are after market mufflers. Way to dang loud! The car was originally given as a gift to a Catholic Priest in Chicago, he didn't like the car and sold it to my friends dad. My friend has it in the center of his speed shop called 427 Customs. I owned a lot of the old muscle cars from a 340 Dart GTS, 68 Roadrunner, 66 Plymouth Street hemi, Buick v6 Grand national powered 1984 Monte Carlo SS to a 1967 Jaguar XKE Roadster. All were archaic compared to the 2015. My Ecoboost would destroy the 383 Roadrunner, probably stay even if not beat the Hemi and would get destroyed in the quarter mile by the GN powered 1984 Monte (11.01@122mph). the Jaguar would also get thumped by the Mustang on a road course. Should have kept that car though, couldn't afford to keep it. Keep the car and keep working or sell the car and retire! been retired 5 years!

One of the best street brawlers ever in my opinion is a datsun z with a smallblock and a turbo 350 trans in it. Put a set of 8.5" slicks on stock wheels and you can leave them stupid, wondering what happened. I've skint many an ass with that setup. It's a quick way to slap the shit right out of some high dollar cars, nissan gtr's included. Houses can be bought for the price of just the modifications needed to get one of those to run with a $10,000 smallblock datsun.

Just don't take every old car you see for granted. It is quite easy to make the old iron out perform modern muscle.

A couple years back I was at the Syracuse Nationals car show and they had an autocross course setup. There was a bunch of STIs, EVOs, Speed3s, Miatas there competing. The cars all looked and sound heavily modified. A number 60s and early 70s Mustang, Camaros and Firebirds came over from the show field to give the autocross a go.

The fastest guys in the old cars were 2 to 3 seconds faster than the fastest guys in the Sport Compacts. The best show was a women in a 62 Chevy II station wagon that was matching the fastest of the Sport Compacts.

Granted these cars were heavily modified but it is all off the shelf stuff that bolts on. The autocross was sponsored by Hotchkiss which specializes in suspension upgrades for muscle era cars and trucks.

That 425 HP is more like 300 if it was measured by the SAE net measurement used today to rate automotive HP.

FWIW, this is my 68 Barracuda it is a high 12 second car that cruises the highway at 70 mph turning 2100 rpm and gets 23 mpg doing it (over drive is a great thing ? ). It has also had a fair amount of suspension and brake upgrades. May not handle with my PP Mustang but it is no slouch.

  1. I agree there is some very fast older iron out there. Look at the Pure Stock Drags (yea right) cars that are turning 12's and 11's. I went to the drags back in the early and mid 60's. Even the 427 Vettes were very high 13's and the average GTO, SS396 Chevelle and 383 Mopars were lucky to break into the 14's stock. I would think my Ecoboost auto with PP would have beaten most of them. My 426 Plymouth belvedere Street Hemi ran a 13.00 at 110 MPH but only after carb and ignition work, 4.56 gears and slicks.

That 63 convertible weighs less than my GTPP by about 75 lbs.

Interesting, i would have thought it weighed North of 4300 pounds given the size and lack of plastic. It sure seems a heck of a lot bigger than my Mustang.

Older cars are often surprisingly light. Until recently, I had a 1971 chrysler newport 4 door. A barge by any standard, it dwarfs a crown vic. It didn't have power windows or locks, or a big block, but it's still over 19 feet long. I weighed it and was astounded to discover it was right about 4200 lbs. I'd have figured 4500 or so. Another way of looking at it, all but the lightest of the new challengers are as heavy or heavier than it. Though they're big, Stevie Wonder could see which car is bigger if it was parked next to a new challenger.

The 200 airbags, 150 computer modules, 10,000 miles of wiring, solenoid and motorized everything, crash bars and added crush structures hidden everywhere... It makes all modern cars inherently heavy as hell.
