These Chinese ones that work with head units that are android based like the Tesla style ones or Seicane. They surprisingly work well, got one this past weekend. It's not for Sync 3 units but it looks like the same idea.
Got it. I wasn’t sure if you found an Android based thing that works for Sync3 somehow.
They work well because it’s made to work with Android OS, which will be a constant for it. The one in discussion here is made to work with any/all head units including stock ones which makes for an unfortunately huge amount of variables, and is why a Dodge/Jeep/Chrysler infotainment user may have better luck with it than us Ford/Lincoln Sync3 users. :(

The website says it will work with Ford 2017-2020 and that’s the reason why I bought one.
https://carplay2air.com/

2016 Mustangs didn’t come with AppleCarplay and came with SYNC 3 1.0 software but if you changed the hub and installed SYNC 3 2.0 software AppleCarplay works fine like what I did.

CarPlay2air says you need SYNC3 3.0 for they’re “thingy” to work so I upgraded my car to 3.0

So ... just got my “thingy” delivered from China today and as I’ve read in this thread, it probably won’t work :( .

I can’t try it out until X-Mas because Santa is giving it to me on X-Mas day ugh

I’ll report back

I’m aware. I was commenting on why user experiences will vary with this device from car brand to car brand. On the Jeep Forums it works fine if you “don’t touch anything” for a minute or so, meanwhile someone with a Sync3 system (Mustang) is going to have a different experience, as will someone who buys it for their Chevy.

Me too - I’m not defending this device by any means. I think it’s a bit ridiculous that they would list Sync3 being compatible if it’s hit or miss. I wonder if you need a specific revision installed?

You're right. Found out it does work on the center port for post-2016s. The 16's came with three ports--two in the arm rest and the one under the radio. To use CarPlay you had to change out the arm rest port and update Sync 3.

Two CarPlay-capable ports would be even less reason for me to use wireless.
16's only have 2 USB ports.

If you see a 16 with 3 ports it's because somebody used a USB module out of an F150 to add carplay. The F150 module doesn't have a place to plug the front USB port into. So the port may physically be there, but it's dead.

My 16 GT350s came new with 3 ports. True of all other early 16s as well. All three worked as USBs. However, for car play, I had to change the arm rest double port to a single port and update the software.

Upgrade USB hub, in console, for Apple Carplay - HU5Z-19A387-A

I had an early 2016 GT, got it the first week of October in 2015, part of that dealerships first shipment of MY 16 Mustangs. There were 2 usb ports, not 3.

Speaking of 2015-2016 GT350 tech packages, which came with Sync 3, 3 x USB ports but no provisions for Car Play. I still have the dual-port one that I removed from the arm rest--paper weight now.

Long discussions had by many within the following thread, ranging from wondering if Ford would actually make a software upgrade to allow for Car Play to speculation that expensive hardware swaps would be needed. @HizliBullet was the hero that saved us from ourselves..

I got one for christmas as well and after a little fiddling and upgrading it we, (or rather my husband who’s a programmer), got it to work yesterday. Just went down to try it again this morning and it works like it should. Didn’t even take long to connect. Neither of us have a lot of confidence it won’t just randomly stop working at some point, but for now it does. I have a 2019 EB premium and an iPhone 10 Xs Max.

Awesome. I couldn't get it to work. the screen just froze.

What upgrading did you/he do ?

I see you have SYNC 3.3. I have SYNC 3.0 I wonder if that is the difference ?
