Anyone else have what looks like white glue around their map light housing where it meets the headliner?

I tried cleaning it with alcohol, but it seems like it's stained the plastic. I don't want to use a harsh chemical and damage the plastic finish.

Thoughts?

It's an S550 map light housing. They're all the same. I can post a picture later. Looks like glue residue from the factory.

No glue is used by factory. The dealer may have broken housing to remove it and tried superglue to get it back in place. Does it have bright led bulbs or the original yellow ones ?
If so whoever fitted them broke the housing.

I have no idea what it is. I'm just saying it looks like adhesive residue. The fitment is fine.

I guess maybe I should clarify my question - what is a good cleaner to remove residue from plastic trim? Rubbing alcohol didn't work.

Goof off or goo gone have worked for me in the past.

If it can't be cleaned and is stained it may need to be painted.

I'd try 3m glue remover just to get glue off.

As others mentioned, any citrus cleaner should be fine to get glue residue off. Then you can follow up with a window cleaner (something that evaporates) to clean it all up.

As someone said, the factory doesn't use glue. If you bought the car used the PO may have done something. If it's super glue, or any glue really, it may come off with a little judicial picking/scraping. If you were to try any stronger chemical (goof-off, acetone, etc) I'd try someplace inconspicuous first I case it damages the finish. Some can even dull plastic finishes or even melt plastic.
A little touch-up paint or marker might be the best option.

When you mentioned white, the first thing that came to mind was a water leak. (Limescale or calcium buildup). As mentioned earlier, it could be glue if a service tech wanted to try gluing back a bezel that had broken clip features.

I've seen what you are describing before on a friends car actually. He was also from Arizona just like you OP, where it gets nice and hot. I think overtime the heat will slowly do that. I would try Goof Off, its an automotive specific product similar to goo gone.

Here's link to experiences with dome light.seems they're easily cracked when attempting to change bulb
If you're nor original owner this might be helpful. Even if you bought it new one of the Dome lights may not have been working and they broke the housing on the process. The other thing i was thinking bulb may hav e coating on it which melted in the aarizona either.good luck

Ok mystery solved. I tried to pop off the map light housing and it looks like the previous owner broke one of clips when putting in LED bulbs, and caked it with super glue. 🙄 They probably got some on the housing but when they wiped it off it left a white shadow/stain on the black plastic.

I used some citrus adhesive remover with some elbow grease and it seems to have come off.
